India, led by KL Rahul, continued their remarkable performance in the second match, which got underway on Thursday, after winning the first Test at Chhatogram. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill managed to push India to 19/0 at stumps on Day 1 as the visitors trail India by 208 runs. Bangladesh, who chose to bat first, was skittled for 227 in their first innings.
The stunning absence of Kuldeep Yadav was the day’s best headline, though. The chinaman spinner had a standout performance in the first Test, impressing with both the bat and the ball and earning Player of the Match awards. Kuldeep had contributed 40 crucial runs by that point. More than that, he maintained his composure in the middle for 114 deliveries and put together an excellent 92-run partnership with R Ashwin for the eighth wicket.

India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik expressed his thoughts on the matter, saying that a thorough view of the scenario is necessary. He also rated R Ashwin and Axar Patel higher than the chinaman spinner.
“We have to look at the situation holistically. Ashwin is our number one spinner, number two is Axar because of the performances he has given with Jadeja not being around. That leaves Kuldeep being number three,” Dinesh Karthik said.
“Just one Test match won’t get Kuldeep ahead of Axar. Axar has been doing well for quite some time now, he has actually been the leader of the spin bowling attack when Ashwin has had a tough day, Axar has backed him,” Dinesh Karthik added.
“If Jadeja is there he certainly slots in at number two but for the moment Axar is number 2. And if they decided, looking at the pitch, that there is going to be held for the medium pacers, so let’s go with three medium pacers, and the axe had to fall on the spinner, then they went with Kuldeep Yadav, which is understandable,” Dinesh Karthik said during a Cricbuzz discussion.
