India’s stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan fell three runs short of his 18th one-day international century in the first ODI against West Indies which is being played at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad on July 22, 2022.

This is the first one-day match of the three-match series and the remainder of the matches will be played on July 24 and 27 respectively, at the same venue. The ODI series will be then followed by a five-match T20I series, featuring an almost full-strength Indian team.

Meanwhile, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and chose to bowl first. During the toss, it was revealed that West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder had contracted Covid-19, ruling him out of the first ODI and possibly the entire ODI series as well.

For India, Shubman Gill returned to the 50-over format in international cricket after a gap of 16 months. Sanju Samson was picked as the wicketkeeper in this match over Ishan Kishan.

India had a good start to their innings as openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill hammered the West Indies bowlers, both pacers and spinners. The duo hit the bowlers to all parts of the Trinidad ground. Their left- and right-hand combination troubled the bowling side leading to Pooran changing his fields and bowlers regularly and he himself came onto bowl.

Shubman Gill was the first wicket to fall, making his maiden ODI fifty. He was run out by Nicholas Pooran for 64 in 53 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes to his name. He had added 119 runs for the opening wicket in 17.4 overs.

Then Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer continued to take singles and doubles and hit the occasional boundary as well. The duo had added 94 runs for the second wicket when Shikhar Dhawan got out.

Dhawan was batting on 97 with 10 four and 3 sixes but tried to cut Gudakesh Motie towards the off-side, but the shot went in the air where Shamarh Brooks took a very good diving catch, leaving the Indian captain three runs short of his 18th century in ODIs.

Fans on Twitter were left a bit sad as Shikhar Dhawan fell for 97 runs and shared their opinions on the social media site.
