IPL 2022: Brendon McCullum Starts Senseless Cricket In The Garb Of Fearless Cricket At Times – Salman Butt Lashes Out At KKR Head Coach

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt lashed out at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Brendon McCullum and said that he “starts senseless cricket in the garb of fearless cricket”.

Former New Zealand captain McCullum was recently appointed as head coach of England’s Test team and he will step down as Kolkata Knight Riders head coach after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League 2022.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Butt slammed KKR head coach and said that McCullum has got some issues as he advises his team to play fearless cricket without considering other factors.

“McCullum has some issues. He knows one way. He won’t look at the pitch, the venue, what can we score, how much we need for a particular opposition. He just says play freely, score quickly. He starts senseless cricket in the garb of fearless cricket at times,” Butt said.

The ex-Pakistan captain was asked by a fan about KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer’s remarks on coach and CEO interfering with team selections, to which he replied by saying that the captain is allowed to make mistakes and he is not in the team to follow anyone’s commands.

“You need to give leverage to the team. When you make someone a captain, he is allowed to make mistakes. Captain is not your peon, who will follow all your commands,” said Butt.

Butt also talked about McCullum’s poor stint as captain of the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League in 2017 and 2018 and said that the meaning of McCullum’s fearless cricket was to keep smashing without looking back.

“We saw a lot of that in Lahore Qalandars. The meaning of McCullum’s fearless cricket was to keep your brains aside and just keep on hitting without looking back. If you have lost 7 out of 10 wickets with 15 overs remaining, he still wanted the team to play that attacking way.

“Lahore gave a lot of chances to him but his method didn’t work out. That kind of tactic can work on good pitches but it’s not a remedy for all conditions. As a coach, you must plan for all conditions,” Butt added.
