Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said that he was surprised to see Rishi Dhawan bowling the final over for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their recent IPL 2022 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 25, 2022. He also feels that it was not planned for Dhawan to bowl the 20th over.

Chennai Super Kings required 27 runs in the last six balls from PBKS, when Dhawan, who is playing in the Indian Premier League for the first time since IPL 2016, was tasked with bowling the pressure over by Punjab captain Mayank Agarwal. However, Vettori stated that the bowler showcased great composure in the crucial over to help his side win the contest.

Dhawan dismissed MS Dhoni on the 3rd ball of the over, despite going for a six off the first ball, and managed to defend the total easily.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo following PBKS’ 11-run victory over CSK, Vettori mentioned that he was surprised to see Dhawan bowling the last over of the run chase. MS Dhoni was still there with Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni was fresh coming off after scoring 16 runs in 4 balls against Mumbai Indians.

Vettori said after the game: “I can’t imagine that they had planned on giving Rishi Dhawan the final over, it was quite surprising. You could say that he held his nerves to get them through at the end.”

He was praiseful of PBKS bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh for bowling wonderfully well in the death and not letting Jadeja and Dhoni free their arms. He suggested that the two bowlers showed how one should bowl in such crunch situations.

“Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh did now allow Ravindra Jadeja to score as freely as you would have wanted to. He could have possibly been a little more aggressive but you got to give credit to those bowlers. We have seen how hard it is to execute it at the death overs. They gave a perfect example of how to close out an innings,” Vettori said.

Kagiso Rabada was tasked with bowling the 18th over and he conceded just 6 runs, while Arshdeep bowled the 17th and 19th over in which he gave away six and eight runs, respectively.
