Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the first leg of IPL 2021 after picking up a shoulder injury ahead of the start of the season. Delhi Capitals then announced Rishabh Pant as the skipper for the season. He took them to the playoffs ending as the number one team in the points table in the group.

Shreyas Iyer after making a return in the UAE leg was not the same player and form and was stripped off as the captain of the franchise as well. As it turned out, Iyer parted ways with Delhi and was roped in by KKR at the IPL 2022 mega auction. He was also announced as the skipper of the franchise heading into IPL 2022.

Iyer will lead KKR when they play their first match against CSK on March 26. Iyer spoke to the Times of India ahead of the IPL season looking back at his injury and returning back as a skipper for KKR. He said that between losing the captaincy and the injury, the second one was a bigger setback.

Injury Was A Bigger Blow Than Losing Captaincy: Shreyas Iyer

“Injury. That was a much bigger low. If that did not occur, they would not have stepped me down as a captain. Forced breaks are by no means simple as a result of it’s important to begin over again. Accidents and rehabs are painful.

“However I need to say, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The injury had made me really feel I used to be 50% of the participant I in any other case am. Having absolutely recovered, I’ve come again contemporary and really feel good” Iyer further added.

He also touched upon returning as a skipper for KKR after doing a fair job with Delhi Capitals between 2018-2020. Iyer took Delhi to the final of IPL 2020 but lost out unfortunately to Mumbai Indians.

“I certainly had an amazing flow when I was in Delhi. When I took over, things kept going really well. I was always thinking from a captaincy point of view. How I would make my team win, and how I would contribute in some way to see to it, that maybe we reach a certain position which we haven’t before.

“So, when you start thinking like a captain, you obviously change your body language, change your perception on the field basically about yourself. So that thing really helped me,” said Iyer.

Shreyas Iyer thanked the KKR management for trusting him and assigning him the captaincy role ahead of a new season. They signed him up for 12.25 crores in the mega auction making him one of the most expensive players in this year’s auction.

“And again, getting this opportunity to play for KKR and them showing faith in me to become a captain and lead their franchise, I really appreciate that. It’s a great honour for me to lead them,” he concluded saying.
