KKR vs RR: Twitter Reacts As Venkatesh Iyer Gets Dropped From KKR Playing XI After String Of Poor Performances
Updated - 03 May 2022, 07:19 AM
After being touted as the next best all-rounder for India, Venkatesh Iyer’s slump has come as a surprise and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has decided to drop him for the game against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Monday.
Iyer was a major part of KKR’s resurgence in the second half of the IPL 2021 season held in UAE but his lackluster performances in the IPL 2022 season, after being retained, have led to his axing from the team.
In 9 matches so far, Iyer scored just 132 runs with a best of 50. His runs have come at a terrible strike rate of 97.78 and an average of 16.5.
The tall all-rounder was demoted down the order so as to play the role of the finisher which he does for the Indian team in the shortest format. Unfortunately, he failed to succeed there and KKR has started to look at other options.
With the ball in hand, he has just bowled 3 overs and conceded 38 runs, further worsening his case for a place in the playing XI. He has been replaced by Anukul Roy as KKR look to break their 5-match losing streak against RR.
Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI): Aaron Finch, Sunil Narine, Shreyas Iyer(c), Baba Indrajith(w), Nitish Rana, Anukul Roy, Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, Umesh Yadav, Tim Southee, Shivam Mavi
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Venkatesh Iyer’s axing:
Took 10 games for KKR last year to decide they want to retain Venky and it's taken 9 games to drop him this season

KKR retained Venky n Varun ahead of Rahul tripathi just to bench them. ?

Venky goes up and down and out of the side now. Sigh.

KKR dropped Venkatesh Iyer. But we know him for scoring in second half of the tournament. ? #IPL

Just build a team around Shreyas and release all the dead weights starting with Venkatesh Iyer and I’m pretty confident he’ll deliver us an IPL trophy. His captaincy tonight again was top notch.

Venkatesh Iyer just hasn't got going this season. 9 matches, 132 runs, avg of 16.50, SR of 97.78. Going into the season, KKR would have expected him to be one of their trump cards… but it just hasn't worked out. pic.twitter.com/SX3doorlv5

KKR's retained player Venkatesh Iyer dropped from playing XI.
And when i say their retentions weren't upto the mark…ppl get offended. Now KKR themselves are doing it.
I hope they win this game.#KKRvsRR— Priyank Sahai (@priyank_sahai) May 2, 2022
Quite a steep fall for Venkatesh Iyer.

KKR are paying for 2 of the worst retentions of the league. Varun Chakravarty was impressive but still didn't have a proven record in India. He only did well in UAE. Venkatesh Iyer was a half season wonder who also got fast tracked into the national side just because he can bowl.
