Rajasthan Royals (RR) leg-spinner Rahul Tewatia gave his side their first wicket against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the form of opener Venkatesh Iyer in Sharjah on Thursday.

Rahul Tewatia broke KKR’s 79-run opening stand with Iyer failing to connect his reverse sweep as the ball sneaked between his legs. On the 5th ball of the 10th over, Iyer tried to innovate on another sluggish Sharjah pitch by reversing his stance and looking to tonk the ball over the boundary.

Rahul Tewatia, however, stuck to his strength and fired the ball in at 87 kph at the stumps. Iyer’s swing missed the ball as it took a deflection off his leg and crashed into the top of the off-stump. Rahul Tewatia was pumped after dismissing the in-form Iyer.

Openers put KKR in a strong position

After being put in to bat first by RR, KKR openers, Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer started cautiously with ticking around singles. Though both of them tried to hit the RR bowlers, the sticky nature of the Sharjah pitch didn’t allow them to smoke boundaries. RR couldn’t break the pair in the powerplay who scored 34 runs in the first six overs with Gill hitting the solitary six in the powerplay.

Iyer, who had hit a couple of boundaries, then freed his arms against Jaydev Unadkat, clobbering the pacer for a four and couple of sixes before getting bowled by Rahul Tewatia, failing to nail his reverse hit. Iyer departed after scoring 38 runs off 35 balls. After hammering a four and a six, Nitish Rana fell to Glenn Phillips.

Gill, on the other end, continued to stroke some sublime boundaries to notch up his fifty in 40 balls. Rahul Tripathi started off in a blazing fashion smashing 3 fours in his first 9 balls. At the time of writing, KKR are 127/2 at the 15-over mark and are set for a big finish.
