Former Australian captain Greg Chappell is quite sure that Usman Khawaja would be the right replacement for the Aussie opener, David Warner, who is yet to recover from the bruised ribs he suffered during the Gabba Test.

Warner found form in the Ashes opener as he scored a stroke-filled 94. During the knock, he was struck plumb in the ribs by a Mark Wood-pacy delivery. He didn’t walk out to bat for the second innings and was also off the field during England’s second innings.

You’ve got Khawaja obviously, who is a batting replacement and he can bat pretty much anywhere in the order. If they had to go outside of the 15, I’ve got no idea to be honest because I haven’t been watching domestic cricket that closely,” Chappell was quoted as saying to Sportsday on Tuesday.

He would be sensational under the lights – Greg Chappell on Jhye Richardson

Josh Hazlewood was ruled out of the second Test at the Adelaide and Jhye Richardson was named as his replacement. With the inclusion of Richardson, there is a lot more variety to the attack and since the Adelaide Test is a day-night affair, it might even give him an advantage, as per Chappell.

I think Richardson is the obvious choice for Hazlewood. He would be sensational under lights if he bowls like I know he can bowl. He’s quick he’s accurate, he doesn’t get the bounce that a Hazlewood gets but he’ll be a different angle, a different sort of height. So it’s a change of angle and height.”

Cummins and Hazlewood, there’s not a hell of a lot of difference between them as right-hand bowlers, albeit Cummins skids a little bit more than Hazlewood does. Richardson will be more of a skidder so he’ll add a bit of variety to the attack,” Chappell stated.

The second Test will begin on December 16 at the Adelaide Oval. Australia currently leads the 5-match Ashes series by a 1-0 margin.
