Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 - Sri Lankan Wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani Fined For Breaching ICC’s Code Of Conduct

Anushka Sanjeewani, Sri Lanka’s wicketkeeper batter, has been found guilty of violating the Level 1 ICC Code of Conduct and has been fined 15% of her match fee.

During Sri Lanka’s Group 1 match against Bangladesh in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 on Sunday, Anushka Sanjeewani breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

As a result, she was found guilty of using language, action, or gesture that could provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter.

Anushka Sanjeewani has also received one demerit point for her breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, which is her first offense in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred during the 10th over of Bangladesh’s innings when Sanjeewani aggressively celebrated the dismissal of batter Sobhana Mostary by running towards her with her fists clenched.

Sanjeewani accepted the proposed sanction by GS Lakshmi of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, and therefore, a formal hearing was not necessary.

The on-field umpires Anna Harris and Sue Redfern, third umpire Jacqueline Williams, and fourth umpire Kim Cotton charged Anushka Sanjeewani for her Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. Sanctions for Level 1 breaches include an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50% of the player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
