All-India Selection Committee Chairman Chetan Sharma has revealed the reason behind Virat Kohli’s removal as captain in one-day internationals during a sting operation conducted by a television channel. The 57-year-old claimed that there was a huge clash of egos between the two legendary captains of the Indian cricket team.

Team India failed to win the title in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022 under Chetan Sharma’s tenure as chief selector. The former Indian pacer was criticized for making controversial selections at marquee events. Sharma was sacked after their exit from the World Cup in Australia, but surprisingly, he was re-appointed.

Chetan Sharma said that the selectors removed Kohli from the ODI captaincy due to his decision to give up the T20I captaincy. He stated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not want two skippers for two white-ball formats.

“Removing someone from captaincy is the job of selectors. We removed him from the ODI captaincy as we wanted to have one white-ball captain. This is normal procedure and even he (Kohli) knows it. After Virat announced that he was giving up the T20I captaincy, the selectors made up their minds to remove him from the ODI captaincy as well,” Sharma said.

Virat Kohli announced his resignation from the T20I format before the T20 World Cup 2021 in the United Arab Emirates, and the multinational tournament would be his last stint as captain.

The BCCI is reportedly not happy with Sharma’s allegations during the sting operation and plans to sack him as the chief. This sting operation created a lot of buzz and could change the dynamics of Indian cricket in the days to come. The controversies within the Indian team have created concern in cricket circles.
