Mitchell Starc will most likely miss the third Test against South Africa in Sydney after suffering a finger injury in his left hand, his bowling arm, on the first day of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

On Monday, the fast bowler broke the tip of his middle finger while attempting to catch at long-on during the middle season. He promptly left the field to conduct additional observations and scans.

The Boxing Day Test match, which is now being played at the storied Melbourne Cricket Ground, forced three of Australia’s first XI players to leave the game injured, casting a shadow over their chances in the ongoing Test series against South. Cameron Green, David Warner, and Mitchell Starc are currently dogged with injuries, with Mitchell Starc being the most dubious.

Starc hurt his finger while attempting a catch, and he hasn’t played since. As per reports from Australia, the player won’t take part in the third Test match, which begins on January 4.

Pacer Mitchell Starc now looks doubtful for the third Test match set to be played on January 4.

“I don’t know what he’s technically done, but it doesn’t look the greatest,” Australia spinner Nathan Lyon told cricket.com.au during the game.

Starc returned to the net after being injured, but according to Lyon, he did not seem good.

“He walked out back and tried to bowl, but to be honest, I believe it (felt) a little different,” Lyon said.

“Unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game; all we can hope for is that he gets the best possible results from the scan,” the spinner ended.

David Warner’s double century in his 100th Test match gave Australia a commanding lead over South Africa, an uncommon occurrence in the game’s history. With Warner excluded, Steve Smith displayed class by hitting 85, but his performance was marred by a bad shot selection and an odd deck bounce.

Australia had an almost 200-run advantage over the Proteas at the close of Day 2 and still technically has seven wickets in hand. But it’s probable that 3 of the 7 will sit out of this Test match.
