Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have appointed South Africa international player Faf du Plessis as the captain of the team for IPL 2022. Du Plessis will replace the team’s iconic player Virat Kohli who stepped down from the role at the conclusion of last season.

Du Plessis was an integral part of CSK since he joined them in 2012 and has won two IPL titles with the ‘Yellow Brigade’. The South African batter amassed 2932 runs from 93 innings at the strike rate of 132.

I couldn’t be happier to pass on the baton to a good friend: Virat Kohli on Faf du Plessis

Kohli, who led RCB in 140 IPL matches until 2021, confirmed the news that the South African star batter will be his successor to lead the franchise. Kohli also said that he is excited to play under Faf du Plessis for the new season.

“First and foremost the most important news is that Faf is going to be the captain of RCB and I couldn’t be happier to pass on the baton to a good friend someone that I have known well over the years,” Kohli said in a video uploaded on RCB’s Twitter page.

“We have been in touch for many years now and he is one of the few guys that I have gotten to know little bit from cricket and we get along very well.  So absolutely excited for him to lead RCB and play under him, the partnership with Faf is going to be an exciting one for the RCB fans along with Maxie as well as the group we have retained.

“And also the squad that we put together, I think is pretty amazing. I can’t wait to get started and catch up with Faf and the rest of the boys,” he added.

RCB has also signed the likes of Harshal Patel, David Willey, Finn Allen, Josh Hazlewood, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dinesh Kartik and Siddharth Kaul for the upcoming edition of the IPL. The team will play its first IPL match against Punjab Kings on March 27 at Dr D.Y Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
