IPL 2022: Faf du Plessis Announced As Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Captain

Faf du Plessis was announced as the skipper of Royal Challengers Bangalore for the IPL 2022 season. The right-handed batsman will lead the side in the tournament. Virat Kohli, who led the side in the last season,  stepped down as RCB skipper after the last year’s tournament.

Faf du Plessis was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore during IPL 2022 auction. The franchise bought the South African player for Rs. 7 crores during the auction. Faf du Plessis was part of Chennai Super Kings in the last season but will don the RCB jersey this time.

IPL 2022: Faf du Plessis Announced As Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Captain

Last season, Faf du Plessis gave an impeccable performance for the team. In 16 matches, he shattered 633 runs at an average of 45.21. Plessis slammed 6 half-centuries in the tournament. His highest score was an unbeaten 95-run knock. He also finished as the 2nd highest run-scorer in the tournament.

Royal Challengers Bangalore bought 19 players during IPL 2021 auction. Their costliest players during the auction were Wanindu Hasaranga and Harshal Patel. The three-time runners-up RCB spent Rs. 10.75 crores each to grab both the players in their squad.

In the overseas category, Wanindu Hasaranga, Faf du Plessis, Josh Hazlewood, Sherfane Rutherford, Finn Allen, and David Willey were some key players that Royal Challengers Banglaore bought during IPL 2022 auction.

Among Indian players, Harshal Patel, Dinesh Karthik, Shahbaz Ahmad, Siddharth Kaul, and Karn Sharma were some popular players that the team bought.

Ahead of IPL 2022 auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore retained three players in their squad. Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj were the three players that the team retained ahead of the auction.

Virat Kohli was RCB’s top retention. The franchise retained him for Rs. 15 crores. Glenn Maxwell was retained for Rs. 11 crores while Mohammed Siraj was retained for Rs. 7 crores.

Last season in IPL 2021, RCB gave an impressive performance. After the completion of the league stage, the Virat Kohli-led side finished on the 3rd spot in the points table with 18 points. They won 9 matches and lost 5 out of 14. However, RCB lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator match and finished on the 4th spot in the tournament eventually.

Royal Challengers Bangalore has never won an IPL title but is one of the strongest teams in the tournament. They have reached finals on three occasions- IPL 2009, IPL 2011, and IPL 2016. However, RCB lost the final on all these occasions and failed to clinch the trophy.
