The ICC World Cup 2023 will be played in the round-robin format with all the top teams playing each other once in the league stage. The top four sides will make the knockouts with the top two playing the final. The format remains the same as the 2019 World Cup. The Men in Blue last won an ICC title in 2013 under the leadership of MS Dhoni which was the ICC Champions Trophy. Since then it has been a decade that India has been waiting for their next ICC title.

The Men in Blue have lost repeatedly in the semifinals and finals of ICC events in the last decade with the team facing severe criticism for not winning an ICC final. They have lost as many as nine ICC finals in the last decade with the latest of them being the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final against England.

The World Cup will be a litmus Test for the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, The two experienced players have been a part of many losses in knockout games since India’s last ICC title win in 2013. Rohit’s captaincy might come to an end if India fails to win the ICC title.

Many teams hire mentors ahead of big ICC events like these. Pakistan roped in Matthew Hayden as a batting consultant ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022. The BCCI themselves roped in MS Dhoni as the team’s mentor ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021.

Ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023, Team India ideally needs a mentor to keep them focused during the tournament. Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the side will also get an additional support staff to back him up. In this article, we pick three names who can become a mentor of the Indian cricket team in the mega event.

Shastri was recently the coach of the Indian cricket team. Under him, the team had some memorable victories, especially in Test cricket. India won the Border Gavaskar Test sides under him away from home in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

He knows the players inside out and vibes with them perfectly. He also had a good rapport with the likes of Kohli and Rohit which might be a big factor in the management willing to rope him in as a mentor for the tournament.

Tendulkar has achieved everything in the world of cricket. He is still the highest run-getter in international cricket even a decade after retirement.

He is already the mentor of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians and can do very well as a mentor of this Indian cricket team. His presence in the dressing room should work as a big motivation for this group of payers who idolized him while growing up.

Gary Kirsten

It was under Gary Kirsten’s coaching that India won the World Cup the last time they hosted it in 2011. 10 years down the line, the BCCI might want to rope him in as a mentor to work on the mental psyche of players and get them ready to play the big games.

India have failed to handle pressure in knockout games in ICC tournaments in the last decade and that is something that Kirsten can work on with the current group of Indian players.
