The veteran India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has backed the senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to captain Team India in the Asian Games 2023.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to send its Men’s and Women’s teams for the upcoming Asian Games. The competition will take place in China from September 23 to October 8 and it will clash with the World Cup 2023. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will take place in India from October 5 to November 19.

A few reports have claimed that the veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan might captain India in Asian Games. Also, VVS Laxman will reportedly travel with India for the competition as head coach.

However, Dinesh Karthik feels Ravichandran Ashwin is the right candidate to lead India in Rohit Sharma’s absence. The wicketkeeper-batter said that Ashwin is one of the all-time greats and he deserves to captain India.

“[Ravichandran] Ashwin is arguably one of the greatest cricketers ever to have played in terms of his quality of bowling, the amount of wickets he has picked up and the number of Man of the Series he’s done,” Dinesh Karthik said during an interaction with PTI.

“I genuinely wish if this Asian Games, India is sending a B team because the main team is going to be preparing for World Cup, and if they feel Ashwin is not part of the ODI setup. I really hope and wish they make him the captain because I think he deserves it.”

“But I really hope and wish selectors make the call to make him the captain for the Asian games, which I think will be a feather on his hat and something that is very well-deserved for him.”
