"The magician of off-spin"- that's what comes to mind when someone talks about Ravichandran Ashwin in India. Ashwin is a premium spinner for Team India who is a regular member of the Test side. Ravichandran Aswhin is a right-arm off spinner and a brilliant tailender batsman.

Whether it’s Tests, ODIs, T20Is, or IPL, Ravichandran Ashwin has tasted success in every format. Known for his variations with the ball, Ashwin has featured for Team India in many crucial ICC tournaments in the past.

R Ashwin is one of the few bowlers with a ton of Tests and ODI appearances in his kitty. Since 2010, the right-arm spinner has played more than 100 Tests and 100 ODIs for the Indian team.

Early Life

Ravichandran Ashwin was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on September 17, 1986. His father Ravichandran was a pace bowler, who played club cricket. His mother's name was Chitra. He started his cricket journey under his childhood coach Chandrasekar Rao.

Ashwin was good at both sports and academics, as he completed his engineering in Chennai. However, he chose to flourish his cricket career and became one of the best spinners to play for Team India.

Ashwin played for Tamil Nadu domestic team in his early career. He rose to fame with his association with Chennai Super Kings in IPL. In the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Ashwin played a crucial role in driving CSK to back-to-back trophies. He tasted a lot of success under CSK skipper MS Dhoni and went on to play for Team India under the same skipper.

International Career

Ashwin made his international debut in June 2010, when he played against Sri Lanka in an ODI game during a tri-series. A few days later, the off-spinner made his T20I debut in a match against Zimbabwe. He was also part of the Indian team that won the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 under MS Dhoni.

However, he had to wait for his Test debut for almost one-and-a-half years. Ashwin made his Test debut in November 2011 against West Indies. Later, he became a regular member of the side across all three formats.

Ashwin has lost his spot in the limited-overs formats. However, he is a regular member of the Test side. He has 500-plus Test wickets to his name and is the second-highest wicket-taker for India after Anil Kumble.

IPL Career

The veteran spinner has been a consistent performer in the Indian Premier League. He started his journey with Chennai Super Kings in the 2008 season and was part of the side till the 2015 season. Later, he played for teams like Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.

Since the 2022 season, Ravi Ashwin has been part of Rajasthan Royals franchise. He has been a consistent performer with his X-factor of economical bowling. The right-handed batter is an outstanding tailender batsman, who has smashed 5 tons in Tests.

Ashwin was part of the Indian team that won the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. He was also part of the Team when they finished as runners-up in the Champions Trophy 2017, T20 World Cup 2014, World Test Championship 2021, and 2023. He won the Asia Cup in 2010 and 2016.
