Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Wasim Jaffer has shared his views on whether star India National Cricket Team batter Virat Kohli should bat further down the batting order in Test cricket.
Virat Kohli failed to perform well in the first innings of the fifth rescheduled Test against England on July 1 at the Edgbaston, Birmingham. He scored 11 runs off 19 balls, including 2 fours, before being dismissed by young England pacer Matthew Potts. Notably, Kohli was indecisive about leaving or playing at a length ball and he only managed to get an inside edge onto the stumps.

Meanwhile, Jaffer was asked whether Kohli should bat lower down the order for India in Test cricket to get back to form. Former India opener responded by asserting that Kohli has done an amazing job at No.4 in Test cricket and pushing him down the order would be a defensive move. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo Wasim Jaffer said:
“(On whether Kohli needs to drop down in the batting order) No, I don’t think so. He has scored so many runs at No. 4 and it will be a defensive move to push him back. This is not something Kohli is known for.”
Wasim Jaffer Shares His Views On Rishabh Pant Batting Ahead Of Shreyas Iyer
India vice-captain Rishabh Pant came out to bat at No.5 for India on Day 1 and he batted with his natural swashbuckling style and smashed an 89-ball century. Pant was dismissed by Joe Root in the 67th over and he scored 146 runs off 111 balls, including 19 fours and 4 sixes.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, who came out to bat at No.6, was able to score only 15 runs off 11 balls in the first innings.
While sharing his views on Pant batting ahead of Iyer in Test cricket for India, Jaffer said that playing at No.5 gives Pant more confidence. He said:
“(On whether sending Pant above Shreyas was a great move) Yes, as we have already mentioned that he is India’s one of the best Test batters at the moment. So this move gives him even more confidence.”
