WPL 2023: Australian Ben Sawyer Appointed as the WPL's Head Coach By RCB

Prior to the Women’s Premier League beginning next month, Australian Ben Swayer, who is presently in charge of the New Zealand women’s side, has been named head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

In addition, Sawyer, 45, is now Birmingham Phoenix’s coach in The Hundred. In addition to being the assistant coach for the Australian women, he has led the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

RCB Confident About Ben Sawyer

“He (Sawyer) has won three World Cups with Australia. A fast-bowling expert. He has also won the BBL titles with Sydney Sixers. He has made it to the finals of The Hundred as well,” RCB’s Director of Cricket operations Mike Hesson said in a video posted on the team’s Twitter handle.

“He has been involved in women’s cricket for over 20 years, knows the women’s game inside out, knows the players very well. He has been thoroughly involved in our preparations leading up to the auction as well.” Maloran Rangarajan, the assistant coach, and director of scouting, VR Vanitha, the scout and fielding coach, and RX Murali will support Sawyer (batting coach).

Dr. Harini will serve as the team’s manager and physician during the competition, while the other support staff members include Head Athletic Therapist Navnita Gautam, Strength and Conditioning Coach Huzefa Talib, Head Physiotherapist Sabyasachi Sahoo, Head of Operations Soumyadeep Pyne.

Sania Mirza, a tennis icon, was designated the side’s coach earlier in the day by RCB for the WPL, which will take place in Mumbai from March 4 to 26.

Smriti Mandhana, Australia’s Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine, England captain Heather Knight, South African all-rounder Dane Van Niekerk, along with Richa Ghosh, were among the big-name women’s cricket players that RCB acquired during the WPL auction on Monday in Mumbai.

On March 5, RCB will play its season opener at the Brabourne Stadium against the Delhi Capitals.
