Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) kick off their IPL 2022 campaign by facing Delhi Capitals on March 27 at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai. Both teams have faced each other on 30 occasions with Mumbai winning 16 games while Delhi Capitals 12.

Delhi topped the league phase of IPL 2021 and qualified for the playoffs while Mumbai Indians failed to make the knockout stage. This year with new squads and refreshed energy both teams will be looking to win the IPL title. Delhi are still looking for their maiden IPL title while Mumbai will be looking for their sixth. They are the most successful franchise in the league so far.

A total of 74 matches will be played across the four venues in Maharashtra. 20 matches each will be played at the Wankhede Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium while 15 games each will be played at the Brabourne Stadium and the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Ahead of the MI vs DC contest, we take a look at the predicted playing XI of Mumbai Indians for the crucial first match.

Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the side and will continue to open the batting as well. It is while opening for Mumbai Indians that he has played his best for the franchise and should look to continue the same. An in-form Rohit is crucial for the franchise. He has had a few good scores in the T20I series against West Indies followed by Sri Lanka.

Ishan Kishan

Kishan was roped in by Mumbai Indians for over 15 crores. This looks more like a future investment. Kishan already had a 500-plus run season with Mumbai in 2020. He will have to prove himself yet again with the pressure of the price tag on his shoulders.

Suryakumar Yadav

Yadav follows the openers at number three. He has been the most consistent run-scorer for the franchise since 2018. In the last four seasons, he has scored over 10000 runs for the franchise and emerged as an important player for the franchise. He was retained ahead of the season for 8 crores.

Dewald Brevis

The U-19 superstar from South Africa was picked up by MI in the mega auction. He has immense potential and that will need to be translated into performance now for the franchise. WIth no Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya available, Brevis will need to fit into the number four slot.

Tim David

The T20 glove trotter will bat at number five and is one of the two designated finishers alongside Kieron Pollard. David is known for his big-hitting prowess across various T20 leagues and has a career strike rate of over 150. Cricket experts are expecting him to shine for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022.

Kieron Pollard

Pollard will bat at his usual number six position. He has been the bank for Mumbai Indians to get the runs in the final overs whether batting first or chasing. His role with remain the same and it is expected that he will keep producing the goods as he has done in the past seasons.

Murugan Ashwin

Murugan Ashwin is the first of the five-bowlers Mumbai should look to the field in their first game. In Ashwin and Mayank Markande they have two quality spinners who can trouble the opposition batsmen. Markande has played for Mumbai Indians in the past and has dismissed the likes of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni in his brief career.

Markande, another leg-spinner will partner Ashwin from the other end. The role of both the spinners will be to control the middle overs and limit the run-scoring of the opposition. So far he has played 18 matches in the IPL and picked up 16 wickets. . He turned out to be a revelation for MI in IPL 2018 and 2019.

Jasprit Bumrah

The ever-reliable Bumrah will lead the Mumbai bowling attack. He has taken 130 wickets for the franchise so far. The pacer has taken 15 wickets or more every year since 2016. With Trent Boult not a part of the franchise anymore, Bumrah will need to take most of the responsibility with the new ball.

Basil Thampi

Thampi will play his first season for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He has played for Gujarat Lions and SRH before in the IPL. He will add the element of pace alongside Bumrah in the bowling attack.

Tymal Mills

England T20 specialist, Tymal Mills completes the most likely MI playing XI that the franchise should look to the field in their first game. He is returning to the IPL for the first time since 2017. Mumbai will be his second IPL franchise who roped him in for 1.5 crores.
