Melbourne Renegades is a Big Bash League (BBL) cricket franchise based in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 2011, they play their home games at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. At present, Nic Maddinson is their captain while David Saker is the head coach.
In the inaugural season, former Australia allrounder and their current head coach Andrew McDonald was the captain. The Renegades had assembled a strong side with the likes of Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell, Brad Hodge, Dirk Nannes, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq in their team. So far, they have won the league just once.
Melbourne Renegades' journey in BBL so far:
Melbourne Renegades made a disappointing start to their journey in the Big Bash League. In the first season, they finished at the seventh spot in the eight-team competition. However, they bounced back strongly in the second season and finished at the top of the points table after the league stage before losing the semifinal.
From 2013-14 to 2016-17, they failed to go past the playoffs again before bouncing back. In 2017-18 season, the Melbourne-based outfit finished at the third spot in the points table and went out of the competition after losing the semifinal. In the following season, they went all the way and won their maiden title.
The triumphant campaign was followed by three disastrous campaigns as Melbourne Renegades failed to justify the champions' tag. In the 2019-20 season, they finished at the bottom of the points table and their fortunes did not change in the next two seasons either as they ended up with the wooden spoon on both the occasions. After three disastrous seasons, they did well in 2022-23 season and finished at the third spot.
