BBL 2024: Shaun Marsh Announces Retirement From All Forms Of Cricket

Shaun Marsh has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 40. He will play his last game with Melbourne Renegades against the Sydney Thunders in the Big Bash League. Shaun Marsh follows his Renegades’ team-mate and former Australian skipper Aaron Finch in drawing the curtains on his playing days. He ended his first-class career with Western Australia last season.
Shaun Marsh last played an international match for Australia in 2019 and he was ruled out of the 2019 World Cup due to an injury after which he never returned to play international cricket. He has played 38 Tests, 73 ODIs, and 15 T20Is for Australia and has played BBL for Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades. He has scored over 2000 runs in both ODIs and Tests.
Shaun Marsh has shown impressive form with the bat in the BBL this season after having a delayed start due to an injury. He has scored 181 runs in just five games at an average of 45.25 and a strike rate of 138.16. Marsh has smashed three out of the six half-centuries this season for Melbourne Renegades and scored an unbeaten 64 off 49 balls against Melbourne Stars in the farewell game of Aaron Finch.
“I have loved playing for the Renegades, I’ve met some great people over the last five years and the friendships I’ve made will last a lifetime,” Marsh said. “This playing group is special. They’ve been amazing to me, amazing teammates and even better friends.
“Our members and fans are some of the most passionate out there and I’m so thankful for their support over the journey. Stick with us, there’s a huge amount of talent in this group and I have no doubt they’ll lead this group back to the top.”

Shaun Marsh Had A Memorable Career With Perth Scorchers
Shaun Marsh moved to Melbourne Renegades in the 2019-2020 season after a memorable time with Perth Scorchers where he played an important role in their success, averaging 47.46 in 40 games for them. Shaun Marsh also thanked the Scorchers and talked about the memorable moments in Perth including the back-to-back titles they won in the BBL.
“I owe a lot to the Scorchers, I’ve got some fond memories of playing in Perth and really enjoyed my time there,” he said. “The back-to-back titles are up there for me as the most enjoyable moments I’ve experienced on a cricket field.”
Shaun Marsh was also the first-ever Orange Cap winner in the IPL as he ended up as the highest scorer in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008 where he amassed 616 runs in just 11 innings at an average of 68.44 including five half-centuries and a century. He played for Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab).
Shaun Marsh may not have played a lot of cricket for Australia but he had a memorable career filled with a lot of runs across different forms of cricket. He was one of the best T20 players to play in different T20 leagues and has been a great opener in the shortest format. His brother Mitchell Marsh plays international cricket for Australia and also represented Australia in the World Cup-winning campaign of 2023.
