IND vs SL: 3 Reasons Why Suryakumar Yadav Is Not An Ideal Vice-Captaincy Choice. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, announced the T20I and ODI squads for the home series against Sri Lanka starting January 3, 2023. Rohit Sharma, who is recovering from a thumb injury will miss the 3-match T20I series and will return to lead the team in the ODIs against Sri Lanka.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya has been named the skipper for the T20I series and will have Suryakumar Yadav as his deputy. Rohit Sharma, who is recovering from a thumb injury that he sustained in Bangladesh recently, will return to lead the team in ODIs when the series kickstarts in Guwahati on January 10. Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram will host the remaining matches in the series.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been dropped from the T20I side while Hardik Pandya has been named as the captain of the side. This could be the way forward for team India for the Road to 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.

IND vs SL: 3 Reasons Why Suryakumar Yadav Is Not An Ideal Vice-Captaincy Choice

1. Pressure On Performance

The 32-year-old Suryakumar Yadav is the highest-run getter in T20Is in this calendar year, having smashed 1164 runs in 31 games at a stunning strike rate of 187.43, including two blistering centuries. His inclusion in the Indian team has added flare to the batting line-up as he has been someone who has taken the attack to the opposition right from the get-go.

Suryakumar Yadav set the T20 World Cup 2022 on fire with his blistering performances. He scored 239 runs in six games played in the T20 carnival and at an exceptional strike rate of 189.68. He scored his 2nd T20I ton in the 1st T20I against the Kiwis, scoring 111* off only 51 balls at a strike rate of 217.65. His first T20I ton of 117 came in a lost cause against England.

He was India’s 2nd highest run scorer and overall 3rd (after Virat Kohli-296, Max O’ Dowd-242) in ICC T20 World Cup 2022 with 239 runs averaging 59.75 at a strike rate of 189.68. Suryakumar Yadav became the No.1 T20I batter after a superb showing in the Super 12 stage of the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he smashed three fifties in five innings.

Thus assigning him as vice-captain for the Sri Lanka T20I series might hamper his performance as he will have added responsibility on his shoulders.

2. Not Much Experience As Vice Captain

Suryakumar Yadav has joined the leadership group for the first time in his career and will be assisting Hardik Pandya in the T20I series. The number 1 ranked batsman in T20I cricket, the 32-year-old batter has been rewarded for his dream run in the shortest format.

The middle-order batter hasn’t led any IPL team before. He was Gautam Gambhir’s deputy at Kolkata Knight Riders for a few years. Even though Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t led an IPL team yet, the right-handed batsman has the experience of leading his state team, Mumbai.
It will be interesting to see if the Mumbai batter’s elevation can see him become a part of the Mumbai Indians leadership group or not. Should Hardik Pandya miss any of the T20Is during the series, Suryakumar Yadav will make his captaincy debut.

3. Return Of KL Rahul Or Rishabh Pant In the Next Series

It’s not clear yet whether Suryakumar Yadav has been assigned vice-captain in T20Is for this Sri Lankan series only. There are chances of KL Rahul, or Rishabh Pant getting back the T20I vice-captaincy when they probably return for the next T20I series against the Kiwis.
