Babar Azam’s 196-run effort, combined with Mohammad Rizwan’s undefeated 104-run innings, helped Pakistan draw the 2nd Test against Australia.

Babar Azam’s 196 and Mohammad Rizwan’s 104 not out helped Pakistan deny Australia victory and force a thrilling draw in the second Test in Karachi on Wednesday. The Pakistani duo put the hosts on track for a tie, but spinner Nathan Lyon turned things around by removing Azam and Faheem Ashraf in short succession.

Lyon went on to deliver the third of the match’s 15 necessary remaining overs and had Azam glove a catch to Marnus Labuschagne at forwarding short-leg with his fourth delivery.

Lyon got Ashraf to slip the next ball, giving Australia a chance to win.

Babar’s protracted innings, in which he slammed 21 fours as well as a straight-six, overtook Michael Atherton’s 185 not out against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1995 as the most by any captain in the fourth innings in a Test match.

“Once we fell three early wickets, we didn’t even think much at all about chasing,” Babar added. “The entire team deserves some credit, particularly Rizwan and Shafique’s batting both against new and old balls.”

Rizwan, who has come a long way, said that the team had intended to go for the kill. However, due to the aged ball, they decided against it. According to Rizwan:

“Batting for five sessions against a top squad is certainly a significant accomplishment. It was also impressive how Australia put out an attempt. They maintained their composure while playing.”

“We had intended to go for the pursuit, but it was an old ball, so we had to play it out. The strategy was straightforward: we’d play five sessions. Babar and Abdullah Shafique were outstanding.”

With the series locked at 0-0, fans can expect a thrilling conclusion when Pakistan and Australia meet in the final Test in Lahore on March 21.
