"1 Step closer to retirement"- Twitter reacts to Rohit Sharma's flop show

Former Team India skipper Rohit Sharma failed to deliver with the bat during the ongoing first ODI of the three-match series against Australia. The right-handed batter perished for just eight runs off 14 balls to veteran pacer Josh Hazlewood’s bowling at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday, October 19.
Rohit returned to international cricket for the first time since the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand on March 9 in Dubai. Ahead of the series, the Mumbai batter was replaced as ODI skipper by Shubman Gill. The series is crucial for him to remain in contention for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
Rohit Sharma Perishes for Low Score in International Comeback
Sharma showed glimpses of form before a delivery from Josh Hazlewood ended his stay at the crease. The Men in Blue lost their first wicket for 13 runs after 3.4 overs.
On the fourth ball of the fourth over, Hazlewood extracted extra bounce and subtle movement from a good length. Rohit poked the delivery to second slip, where Matt Renshaw completed a clean catch.
Notably, it was Rohit's 500th appearance in international cricket. He became the fifth Indian player to achieve this milestone. Sachin Tendulkar (664 matches), Virat Kohli (551 matches), MS Dhoni (538 matches), and Rahul Dravid (509 matches) have already played 500 or more matches at the highest level.

Rohit Sharma Under Scrutiny for ICC ODI World Cup 2027
There has been speculation about Rohit Sharma's ODI future. After retiring from T20Is and Test cricket, Rohit remains active only in One Day Internationals.
Rohit narrowly missed achieving ODI World Cup glory in 2023, when India’s dominant run ended in a heartbreaking final defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad. There have been concerns about his form, fitness, and long-term plans before the World Cup in 2027.
Rohit has amassed 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs at an average of 48.76, including 32 centuries and 58 half-centuries, with a career-best 264. Overall, he has scored 19,700 runs in 499 international matches at 42.18, including 49 tons and 108 fifties.
