BCCI to hand a grand reward to the India Women if they win the World Cup final
The India Women's Cricket team is on the cusp of a historic World Cup victory and is just a step away from writing their names in the record books. The South African team has reached the finals of the competition for the first time.
The South African women had reached the finals of the previous T20 World Cup, which they lost to New Zealand, while even in the Men's T20 World Cup, they had lost to the Indian team. The Men's side is yet to reach the finals of a World Cup, while the Women's team has aced it with a win against England.
The BCCI has confirmed a reward of INR 125 crores for the players and support staff, with a whopping INR 125 Crores for their performance.
BCCI had rewarded the Indian Women's team, who were runners-up in 2017
The Indian Women's team has advanced into the Women's World Cup finals twice, in 2005 and in 2017. Both times, their best finish was in the form of runners-up. In 2017, when India reached the finals under former skipper Mithali Raj, they lost to England by just 9 runs at Lord's.
The BCCI had then rewarded the women cricketers handsomely, as each of the players was handed 50 lakh. The head coach and the support staff were also rewarded with a large amount of money.
Eight years have passed by, and the Women's team has qualified for the third such final, this time under home conditions and are the favourites to win the title. The prize money for each cricketer could be multiplied by over 10 times.
BCCI is following the 'equal pay' policy for Women's Cricket
The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, during his tenure, had announced a whopping INR 125 crore for their performance in the Men's ICC T20 World Cup 2024, after they defeated South Africa in the final.
"The BCCI supports equal pay for men and women, and hence there are a lot of discussions that if our girls win the World Cup, the reward won't be anything less compared to men's global triumph. But it isn't nice to make an announcement before they win the Cup," a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
It can be noted that the BCCI is following the 'equal pay' policy advocated by former BCCI secretary Jay Shah, as this was also awarded back then to the Rohit Sharma-led side.
