Rohit Sharma had a brief yet impressive stint as the test captain of India, having guided the team to their second WTC final in a row, followed by a drawn series against South Africa. This article talks about five players who can break Rohit's captaincy record.

5 Indian Players Who Can Break Rohit Sharma's Captaincy Records In Test

1. Jasprit Bumrah

India's fast bowling spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, can be an option as far as test captaincy is concerned.

Having captained the national side in three test matches, Bumrah has been a part of the leadership group and will be an integral part of the team, taking into account the uncertainty over Kohli's availability.

If the fast bowler can keep himself fit, he will have the opportunity to break Rohit Sharma's record as a captain in test match cricket.

2. Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is one of the frontrunners for donning the captain's hat in test cricket and can lead the team in the upcoming five-match test series against England.

The selectors will look to groom Gill for at least the next 8-10 Years, given the fact that he is young and can be one of the batters that the team can rely upon in the future.

With Gill having age on his side, he will have plenty of time to break Rohit's captaincy record and will look to guide the national team to its third WTC final in 2027.

3. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant will give tough competition to Shubman Gill in the race to become the next test captain, given the way he has performed with the bat and behind the wickets since his debut in 2018.

Pant has the experience of leading the national side as well, having done so in the five-match T20I series against South Africa at home in 2022.

If the management and the Indian board feel that Rishabh will be a perfect fit to captain India for the next 7-8 years, he will have the time and resources to break Rohit Sharma's test captaincy record.

4. KL Rahul

KL Rahul might also be in the reckoning to be India's captain in the longest format of the game, having done so in 2022. Rahul has led India in three test matches after making his captaincy debut against South Africa

The wicketkeeper batter has won two out of the three matches he has played in as the captain of the side, with both wins coming against Bangladesh in a two-match test series.

With the amount of experience that KL has at his disposal, it won't be a surprise if he breaks Rohit's test captaincy record in the future.

5. Shreyas Iyer

Although Shreyas isn't a part of India's test team, the right-hander might make a comeback in the five-match test series against England, scheduled to be played in June this year.

Given his impressive record as captain in the recent past, selectors will be tempted to rope him in as the captain of the side with the absence of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane

Shreyas, who led KKR to their third IPL title, will have the opportunity to prove his credentials as a player and a captain in test matches if he is appointed to do so.
