5 Most Undervalued Indian Cricketers. The Indian cricket team production line is one that has produced incredible talents over the years. There have been some legends of the game while there have been some who have not been able to make the mark.

Despite the country honing plenty of talent, there are few who get muddled in between and end up as the most underrated Indian cricketers. The likes of Karun Nair, Hanuma Vihari, Kuldeep Yadav, Ambati Rayudu and Jaydev Unadkat can be considered as underrated cricketers.

Karun Nair

Karun Nair is a classy right-handed batsman. The year 2016 was really a memorable one for Karun Nair. He made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in July. This was actually a reward for his consistent performances in domestic cricket.

In November, he made his Test Debut. In his only third Test, he became India’s second triple-centurion after Virender Sehwag. He scored 303* against England and shocked everyone. He became only the third man in the game’s history to convert a maiden Test ton into a triple.

Though, apart from his brilliant performances, he could play only 6 Test Matches (the last of which came in 2017 vs Australia) for India along with 2 ODIs. Although, following his removal from the Indian Test squad, Karun Nair struggled considerably in the domestic circuit as well.

Hanuma Vihari

Hanuma Vihari has simply proved to be India’s long-term solution for a batting all-rounder in the longest format of the game. He is a classically correct middle-order batsman. Hanuma Vihari has also piled up huge runs in domestic cricket.

But he is not given enough opportunities in the International Cricket arena which he deserves. He has played only 16 Tests for India scoring 839 runs averaging 33.56. In First Class, he averages 55.17 and has 23 tons in 105 matches.

Hanuma Vihari is the solution for India’s middle-order problem that is hurting India for some time now. He only played in difficult conditions like South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. He should have gotten the chance ahead of Shreyas Iyer in the recently concluded Tests vs New Zealand and he was not considered for the forthcoming 2 Tests against hosts Bangladesh.

Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav is a left-arm wrist spinner bowler. There haven’t been too many bowlers of his like in India, and Kuldeep Yadav, therefore, attracted immediate attention after successful stints at the Under-19 level.

He is the only Men in Blue bowler to take 2 hat tricks in ODIs. He also has a hat trick in all three formats of the game. Kuldeep Yadav is also the fastest Indian spinner to reach 100 international wickets. The chinaman spinner has 26 wickets in 7 Tests, 119 ODI scalps in 73 ODIs, and 44 T20I scalps in 25 T20Is.

He averages 23.84 in Tests, 28.28 in ODIs, and 14.02 in T20Is, but hasn’t got enough opportunities as he debuted way back in 2017.

Ambati Rayudu

Ambati Rayudu has featured in 55 ODIs and 6 T20Is where he averages 47.05 and 10.5 respectively. In ODIs, he has scored 3 tons and 10 fifties.  Ambati Rayudu was handed his India debut in a low-profile ODI series in Zimbabwe in 2013 and he responded with an unbeaten 63, becoming the third-oldest Indian at the time to score a fifty on an ODI debut.

He was part of the 2015 World Cup squad but did not get a game. The following year he was left out of the national World T20 2016 side. After a two-year lull, he found himself back in the ODI side in 2018, appearing in 11 of the 20 matches the Men in Blue played that year, and scoring his third ODI century, against West Indies.

Ambati Rayudu seemed a certain pick for the No. 4 spot for the World Cup in 2019 but found himself passed up in favor of Vijay Shankar, which prompted him to announce his retirement from all forms of cricket in July 2019. He made a U-turn but it seems unlikely that he would be called into the national side ever again.

Jaydev Unadkat

The seasoned left-arm speedster Jaydev Unadkat was called up to India’s Test squad in Bangladesh as a replacement for Mohammed Shami, who has been ruled out of the series due to a shoulder injury.

This is Jaydev Unadkat’s just second call-up to the Test squad, which has come after 12 long years. He made his Test debut in the first Test of the 2010-11 tour of South Africa, where he went wicketless and conceded 101 runs in 26 overs.

The Saurashtra pacer and skipper has played only 1 Test, 7 ODIs, and 10 T20Is. He has 8 scalps in ODIs with a best of 4/41 averaging 26.12. In T20Is, he has 14 scalps averaging 21.5. However, he has picked 353 scalps in 96 First Class games averaging 23.04. He also has 168 scalps in 116 List A and 210 scalps in 170 T20 games.
