Royal Challengers Bangalore is a powerful team in the Indian Premier League that has made it to the finals on three occasions- IPL 2009, IPL 2011, and IPL 2016. But unfortunately, the Virat Kohli-led side ended up as runners-up in all these seasons.

Out of 13 seasons, the team reached the playoffs 6 times, which is quite a good record to look upon. In IPL 2021’s first half, RCB bagged the 3rd spot in the points table with 5 victories in 7 matches.

Royal Challengers Bangalore consists of few powerful domestic players in the current squad like Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Washington Sundar, Mohammad Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Navdeep Saini. Among the overseas players, AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, and Kyle Jamieson are among few popular members of the team.

RCB has singed many outstanding players in the previous auctions but there are also some deals that did not work for the team. Here we take a look at the 5 worst signings by Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL history.

During IPL 2020 auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Aaron Finch for a massive amount of Rs. 4.40 crore. Finch is a hard-hitting batsman in international cricket but he could not show up for a spectacular show in IPL 2020.

The Australian batsman scored 268 runs in 12 innings at an average of 22.33. He managed to hit a fifty in one match but did not smash more good knocks in the season. He batted at a strike rate of just 111+. Finch was also released by the franchise after IPL 2020.

Brendon McCullum (IPL 2018)

Royal Challengers Bangalore signed former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum for a massive amount of Rs. 3.60 crore during IPL 2018 auction. The team played him as an opener in the initial games of the season.

However, the wicketkeeper-batsman could only manage 127 runs in 6 innings at an average of 21.16. He could not smash any big knock while batting as an opener and RCB decided to bench him for the rest of the matches during the season.

Tim Southee (IPL 2018)

Tim Southee was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs. 1 crore during IPL 2018 auction. The franchise picked him to lead the pace attack in 8 games. However, the New Zealand pacer could only pick 5 wickets in 8 matches.

The right-arm pacer picked a 3-wicket haul in one match but remained wicketless in few games. As a result, RCB did not induct him in playing XI in the rest of 6 games during the tournament.

Stuart Binny (IPL 2016)

Stuart Binny was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs. 2 crores during IPL 2016 auction. However, the Indian all-rounder failed to perform well in both batting and bowling. He scored just 63 runs in 6 innings at an average of 21.

While bowling, the right-arm seamer could bag only 1 wicket in 11 matches he bowled. Hence, the 2-crore deal for Binny did not prove to be beneficial for RCB.

Ashok Dinda (IPL 2014)

Ashok Dinda was picked for a big amount of Rs. 1.5 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2014 auction. The right-arm pacer played 9 matches and could only pick 5 wickets. He picked 1 wicket each in 5 matches and remained wicketless in 4 matches.

Later, RCB benched him for 5 matches in the season. Hence, the deal to sign Ashoke Dinda for Rs. 2 crores did not emerge useful for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
