Meghalaya cricketer Akash Kumar Choudhary etched his name into the history books with one of the most explosive innings ever seen in first-class cricket at the CK Pithawala Ground in Surat.

The 25-year-old batter smashed a jaw-dropping half-century off just 11 balls during the Ranji Trophy Plate Group match between Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh in Surat. With this incredible effort, Akash set a new world record for the fastest fifty in first-class cricket.

Coming in towards the end of Meghalaya’s innings, Akash wasted no time settling in. From the moment he took strike, he went on an all-out attack against the Arunachal bowlers. Akash completed his fifty in just 11 balls, which is now the all-time record in first-class cricket. He remained unbeaten on 50 off just 14 balls. His late fireworks have not only provided Meghalaya a perfect finish to their innings but also made history with his extraordinary power-hitting.

Akash broke the previous record of 12 balls set by England’s Wayne White for Leicestershire against Essex back in 2012. Among Indian cricketers, the fastest fifty in first-class cricket belonged to Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandeep Singh, who achieved the feat in 15 balls.

Apart from breaking a 13-year-old world record, Akash became the player who hit eight consecutive sixes.

Players with the fastest fifties in first-class cricket:

11 balls - Akash Kumar Choudhary, 2025

12 balls – Wayne White (Leicestershire vs Essex, 2012)

Record-breaking Ranji Trophy season continues as Akash Kumar stuns Arunachal Pradesh

Meanwhile, the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season has been full of records and surprises, especially in the Plate Group. Earlier, Bihar’s Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest Ranji player ever, while Goa’s Kashyap Bakle and Snehal Kauthankar smashed a historic 606-run partnership.

Now, Akash’s blazing innings has added another unforgettable chapter to this remarkable season. His every shot was clean, timed to perfection, and full of confidence. The Arunachal bowlers had no clue how to stop the onslaught as the ball kept disappearing into the stands over and over again.

Coming in to bat at number eight with the scoreboard already showing 576/6, Akash wasted no time in making his mark. In just a few overs, the all-rounder played a quick and aggressive knock that pushed Meghalaya’s total to a massive 628/6 before they decided to declare the innings.

His explosive batting added the perfect finishing touch to Meghalaya’s already strong position. But Akash wasn’t done yet. With the new ball in hand, he struck early to pick up the first wicket for his team. Arunachal Pradesh now finds itself in serious trouble, trailing by a huge 593 runs and struggling to find a way back into the game in Surat.
