Suryakumar Yadav’s hopes of making a mark in international cricket beyond T20I cricket are rapidly fading, as the former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra made a bold claim on the Indian batter’s future in the ODI and Test cricket.
With a close look at the current Indian cricket team squad selections and team strategies, Chopra claimed that it is almost confirmed that Suryakumar won't feature in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) or Test cricket in the immediate future after he was made India’s T20I captain last month.
Aakash Chopra claims Suryakumar Yadav's chances in ODIs and Tests are all but over
The cricket pundit insisted that the Indian selectors and team management have firmly decided that they won’t give an ODI or Test chance to Suryakumar for now, saying they seem to have categorized him strictly as a T20 specialist, given his explosive performances in the format.
Chopra feels this decision could end his aspirations to shine in the ODI and Test cricket. With limited cricketing action on the horizon in the next few months, the commentator claimed that the national selectors have decided to overlook the stylish right-hander for any forthcoming ODIs and Tests.
The former Indian batter also pointed out the intense competition for spots in the Indian cricket team in Test cricket, making it clear that Suryakumar’s inclusion in the squad remains highly unlikely.
As Team India gears up for the Bangladesh Test series, Chopra has reiterated that opportunities for Suryakumar in both 50-over and five-day cricket are slipping away, as the team management is focusing on other players who can offer more versatility in these formats of the game.
For now, his international cricket journey seems confined to the T20I arena, with no immediate prospects of a return to the ODI and Test formats, according to Chopra, as he strongly feels the national selectors and team management will continue to prioritize multidimensional players.
Indian selectors will consider SKY as a T20 specialist: Chopra
Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel: “Not in the near future (On when will Sky play in ODI or T20). I think that decision has already been taken by the selectors and team management. There is not much cricket now. And I think the selectors and team management have just decided that they won't keep Suryakumar Yadav in the team. They are like that; we will consider SKY as a T20 specialist.
That means there is no chance in Test cricket. There is a different level of competition in tests. There are so many players who want to come in. I don't think SKY will play in the next Test series. Check out the squad for Bangladesh Tests. Sky won't play now. 50-over cricket and 5-day cricket won't happen now for him.”
Chopra also said that Prasidh Krishna has the potential to be a very good bowler at the highest level, so the Indian team should invest in him. He also suggested that there should be a clear roadmap for Avesh Khan, questioning his handling as he was a reserve bowler for the T20 World Cup 2024.
