Former Indian opening batsman Aakash Chopra has not been impressed by Yuzvendra Chahal’s non-consideration in Test cricket. Yuzvendra Chahal has been one of the most impactful bowlers for India in limited-overs cricket in the last few years, proving himself as a wicket-taking bowler regardless of the conditions. But the selectors overlooking him for Test cricket is disturbing for Aakash Chopra.

While Yuzvendra Chahal remains a white-ball specialist, the leggie has expressed his desire to don the whites for India. The Haryana-born leg-spinner also has a decent record in first-class cricket, taking 84 wickets in 31 matches at 33.21, with three four-wicket hauls and two fifers, though it certainly needs improving. Chahal could indeed be given the nod at home Tests against less competitive opponents.

Aakash Chopra finds it disturbing that Yuzvendra Chahal’s name has never come up for Test cricket and feels that the wrist-spinner deserves a call-up. The 43-year old believes that Chahal does bowl smartly, at a good pace, and with accuracy.

“His name has never been considered for Test cricket, I find that slightly disturbing. The only thing you can do is to do well. When you play ODIs and T20Is, you do well there and when you get a chance to play first-class cricket, you do well there as well. I do feel for Chahal, I think you can play him Test cricket as well. He has got the brains, bowls at a good pace and is accurate,”

Aakash Chopra reveals why Yuzvendra Chahal’s first-class numbers cannot be extraordinary:

Aakash Chopra observed that Yuzvendra Chahal’s first-class numbers are good for a bowler, who plays in Lahli, which has an absolute green top. The cricketer-turned-commentator remarked that Lahli’s pitch does not offer much for the spinners; hence, Chahal’s figures cannot be extraordinary.

“His first-class numbers are good. Firstly, he plays for Haryana in Lahli which has an absolute green top, with not much help for the spinners. Generally, the fast bowlers from both sides split the wickets. So your numbers cannot be extraordinary,” he added.
