India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, defeated South Africa by 101 runs in the first T20I match at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday, December 9. During the match, former India opener Aakash Chopra took a playful dig at Pakistan batter Sahibzada Farhan while showering praise on ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

India scored 175 runs for the loss of 6 wickets after being asked to bat first. Arshdeep Singh set the tone with early breakthroughs in the powerplay. The visitors never recovered and were bowled out for just 74 inside 13 overs. Bumrah and Arshdeep finished with two wickets apiece, sealing a dominant win for the hosts.

Chopra joked that hitting Bumrah for a six is so rare that “some people even make a documentary about it,” a clear reference to a film celebrating Farhan’s Asia Cup sixes off the Indian pacer.

“Bumrah ko chhakka maarna itna aasaan nahi hota. Kabhi lag jaaye to kuch log documentary bana lete hain [It’s not so easy to hit Bumrah for a six. If someone manages to do it once, some people even make a documentary on it],” he was heard saying on-air.

The comment came right after Aiden Markram managed to clear the boundary. Chopra didn't mention Farhan by name, but fans immediately caught the reference, especially since Farhan himself had shared that documentary clip after Pakistan’s loss in the Asia Cup final.

Jasprit Bumrah Joins Elite List Of Bowlers After Demolishing South Africa

Jasprit Bumrah added another major milestone to his career during the first T20I in Cuttack. He became the first Indian bowler to claim 100 wickets in each of the three international formats.

The right-arm fast bowler dismissed South Africa’s middle-order batter Dewald Brevis to join an elite global group. Lasith Malinga, Tim Southee, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shaheen Afridi had achieved the milestone before Bumrah.

Bumrah now has 101 T20I wickets from 81 games. He is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format behind Arshdeep Singh, who has taken 107 wickets. Bumrah has built a career on consistency, skill, and mastery across formats.

India Crush South Africa by 101 Runs to Take 1-0 Series Lead

India posted a competitive total of 175/6 after being sent in to bat. Hardik Pandya scored an unbeaten 59 from 28 balls, while Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, and Abhishek Sharma failed to convert their starts. Lungi Ngidi took three wickets for South Africa, stopping India from posting an even bigger total.

South Africa folded for just 74 inside 13 overs as India’s bowlers ran through the lineup. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel each claimed two wickets. Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube picked up one apiece. Only a handful of South African batters managed to reach double digits.

The emphatic 101-run win gave India a 1-0 lead in the series. Both sides will meet again in the second T20I in Mullanpur on Thursday, December 9.
