Aaqib Javed finalized as Gary Kirsten's successor as PCB says NO to foreign coaches

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is looking for a new white-ball coach after former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten resigned from the position last month. According to the latest reports, Aaqib Javed, who is the current senior selector, has emerged as a strong contender to take over as the white-ball coach.

The Pakistan Cricket Board accepted Gary Kirsten's resignation as the men's white-ball head coach on October 28, 2024. Following his resignation, Jason Gillespie, the red-ball coach, was appointed as the interim head coach for the Pakistan men's cricket team during their ongoing white-ball tour of Australia.

According to a sports journalist from Samaa TV, Qadir Khawaja, Aaqib Javed is set to be appointed as the new white-ball head coach of the team.

"Breaking News : Faakhta told me that Ex Cricketer of Pakistan Aqib Javed will be appointed as a new White ball Head Coach soon.." Qadir Khawaja wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The third and final T20I match of the ongoing series between the Pakistan cricket team and the Australia cricket team is set to be played at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on November 18, Monday. The PCB will also need to announce a white-ball head coach for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe.

Pakistan Suffered Group Stage Exit During T20 World Cup 2024

Kirsten and Jason Gillespie were appointed to their respective positions in April 2024. The Pakistan team suffered a 2-0 T20I series loss to England and was eliminated in the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Kirsten was reportedly disappointed with the squad selections and the central contracts list.

Gillespie also had a poor start, including a 2-0 Test defeat at home to Bangladesh. However, his team secured a 2-1 Test series win against England. Pakistan's ODI team secured the series victory over Australia despite losing the first game. However, they lost the first two matches in the ongoing T20I series.

Aaqib Javed, umpire Aleem Dar, and former captain Azhar Ali were appointed as selectors after the loss in the first Test against England. Aaqib Javed played a crucial role in preparing turning tracks for the next two games. England's batters struggled to put up a fight against Pakistan's spinners, Nauman Ali and Sajid Khan.

Also, Aaqib Javed, part of Pakistan's victorious 1992 World Cup team, had a distinguished career, playing 163 ODIs and 22 Tests, with 236 international wickets. Post-retirement, Aaqib Javed made his mark as a coach, notably guiding the UAE to ODI and T20I status and helping them qualify for the 2015 ICC Men's ODI World Cup.

He also guided Pakistan’s U19 team to a World Cup victory in 2004 and served as the bowling coach during Pakistan's 2009 ICC T20 World Cup win. Recently, Javed was replaced as the head coach of Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) by Darren Gough.
