Former World Cup-winning Australian skipper Aaron Finch has predicted that the India vs Australia ODI series will be a great battle between the two giants, with the home side narrowly winning over the visitors by a 2-1 margin.

He has also pointed out the immense support Shubman Gill can receive from the senior pros Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are part of the team. India has named a strong 15-member squad for the three-match ODI series with the Aussies.

The two legends of the Indian team return to the Indian ODI playing XI for the first time since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. They will be seen in action in the first ODI on the 19th of October at Perth.

Aaron Finch predicts the epic India vs Australia battle might end in a 2-1 win for the Aussies

Aaron Finch was part of the ICC World Cup 2015 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, which Australia won. He has now shared his views on the Indian team and the upcoming ODI series.

"It will be a great series," Finch told ICC Digital from Colombo as part of his commentary commitments at the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup.

"It always is against India, and I think having Virat back in there brings out the best in him against Australia. It's always a great battle when you look at it on paper, as it's very evenly matched, but I'd say Australia (win the series) 2-1," he declared.

"Not confidently, though, as India is a great side and it will just be a great series to watch," he added.

Aaron Finch praises Shubman Gill

The former Australian, Aaron Finch, is also interested in seeing how the new Indian skipper, Shubman Gill, fares in his debut ODI series. Shubman Gill has been appointed the new skipper of the Indian ODI side, replacing former skipper Rohit Sharma.

"Shubman has already shown what a good leader he is in T20 cricket and Test cricket, so I'm sure this will be no different," Finch noticed.

"He's a brilliant player, particularly in the white-ball formats, and the way that he captained against England in the Test series is just a huge tick in his box to take the next step and take over the Indian leadership right the way through (all three formats)," Aaron Finch said in high praise of the Indian youngster.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's experience might be a great learning for Gill in Australia

Aaron Finch cited that when Shubman Gill took over as the skipper of the Indian Test side in England, he did not have many players who could provide him with insights and backup. However, this time around, the youngster will have the likes of experienced heads in the form of veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and lastly, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer.

"I think when you look back to that England Test series, he (Gill) didn't have many other options that he could turn to for advice, probably when he was out on the ground, but he did a wonderful job himself."

"But I think just having those guys (Rohit and Kohli) there will be a real calmness for him as well, because it's the ability to bounce ideas, both on and off the field on how you want the team to function going forward, because they've been such a huge part of the team for a long period of time," he concluded.
