In one of the moments of SA20 2025-26, former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers was caught on camera vaping in the dressing room during the innings of Pretoria Capitals against MI Cape Town. It did not escape countless hawk-eyed fans on social media, who quickly clipped and shared the moment.

Pretoria Capitals delivered a dominant all-round display to beat MI Cape Town by 53 runs on Monday, January 12. They climbed to the top of the SA20 standings. The bonus-point victory took Pretoria Capitals to 20 points, moving them ahead of Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who slipped to second place on 19 points.

De Villiers is not the first cricketer linked to smoking during a match. Brendon McCullum once said that he smoked while sitting in the dressing room toilets during the tense closing moments of New Zealand’s 2015 World Cup semi-final win over South Africa.

Ben Stokes also admitted that he smoked a cigarette in the Lord’s showers before going out to bat in the super over of last year’s World Cup final.

AB de Villiers’ Numbers Across Formats

AB de Villiers enjoyed great success in international cricket, especially in ODIs and Tests. He scored 9,577 runs at an average of 53.50 and a strike rate of over 101, showing his ability to dominate bowling attacks.

He was also outstanding in Test cricket. De Villiers played 114 Tests and scored 8,765 runs at an average of almost 51, including 22 centuries, making him one of the most reliable batters of his era.

His numbers in T20 internationals were lower compared to other formats. In 78 T20Is, he averaged 26.12 with a strike rate of 135.16.

However, in overall T20 cricket, he produced far stronger results. He scored 9,424 runs in 340 matches at an average of 37.24 and a strike rate of over 150. He also holds the record for the most Player of the Match awards in the IPL, with 25.

Pretoria Capitals Overplay MI Cape Town With Batting Surge and Bowling Effort

Sherfane Rutherford scored 53 off 27 balls with three fours and five sixes. He came in when Pretoria Capitals were 89/4 with 7.1 overs left and helped push the total to 185/6. He added 69 runs in 34 balls for the fifth wicket with Dewald Brevis.

MI Cape Town struggled during the death overs. They dropped Rutherford and Brevis off back-to-back balls from Corbin Bosch. Brevis then hit two sixes in a row off Kagiso Rabada, while Rutherford took 16 runs off an over from Trent Boult. Rutherford got out on the final ball, but the damage was already done.

While chasing, MI Cape Town lost control quickly. Gideon Peters bowled a double-wicket maiden and finished with 3/32. MI Cape Town slipped from 46/2 to 55/6, losing four wickets for 11 runs.

Brevis also impressed in the field with two excellent boundary catches. Reeza Hendricks fought alone with 68 not out off 50 balls (four fours, four sixes), but MI Cape Town could only manage 132/7.
