Former batter Abhishek Nayar has returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) just days after being removed as the assistant coach of Team India. The Knight Riders welcomed him back into their setup, as the franchise had initially labelled him as their assistant coach, but the post was later deleted.
The BCCI made changes to the national team’s support staff after the team's poor 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series. Abhishek Nayar, fielding coach T Dilip, and strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai have been removed from their roles in Gautam Gambhir’s support staff.
"Everyone in Indian Cricket Knew” About Abhishek Nayar's Sacking
According to a PTI report, the BCCI wasn’t surprised by Abhishek Nayar’s return to Kolkata Knight Riders. The report also revealed that Nayar’s return to KKR was almost certain the moment the BCCI let him go, despite the “hostile” sacking.
"Abhishek would never be out of work even though he has been sacked in a very hostile manner. Everyone in Indian cricket knew that the moment BCCI gets rid of him, KKR would have him back in their fold," an IPL source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
Nayar’s tenure as Team India’s assistant coach came to an end just eight months ago. He had worked alongside Gambhir in the Kolkata Knight Riders' coaching setup during the IPL 2024 season. Nayar also received credit for his behind-the-scenes work with several cricketers, including KL Rahul.

Abhishek Nayar wasted no time returning to a coaching role. He joined the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of their upcoming match against the Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on Monday, April 21. Nayar was seen in Kolkata alongside KKR head coach Chandrakanth Pandit in preparation for the home game.

Nayar has already been working closely with players during training sessions. His return has created a buzz within the KKR camp, with players engaging warmly with him. Nayar had played a key role in establishing and managing the KKR Academy in Mumbai, the team's training hub for years.
Kolkata Knight Riders Aim to Bounce Back After Defeat to Punjab Kings
Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking to make a comeback from their defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS). After seven games this season, KKR has won three and lost four.
They suffered a dramatic middle-order collapse in their most recent match, where they fell from 62/2 to 95 all out while chasing a modest target of 112. This was the lowest total ever defended in IPL history.
With four of their next seven matches scheduled at home, KKR will be hoping to climb the points table. They are currently in sixth place and focused on securing a spot in the top four.
