Abishek Porel, a Bengal and Delhi Capitals keeper-batter, will have to be in judicial custody for 14 days as the Chinsurah Court denied to provide the star cricketer a bail in connection with a case accusing him of rape, physical assault, criminal intimidation and false promises of marriage.
Abishek Porel has been under investigation since June 23. A young woman, who is reportedly studying medicine in Karnataka, filed a case against the well-known Indian cricketer with several charges. Abishek Porel initially turned down all of the allegations made against him, but the police had to work hard to trace him.
Court refuses to provide Abishek Porel bail in the ongoing legal matter
As per media reports, police visited his residence in Chandannagar multiple times but could not trace him. Later, he was arrested in Kolkata and sent to custody.
Porel was arrested on August 11 in Hooghly after being questioned by police as the young woman accused him of rape, blackmail and other criminal offences. As per the previously published media reports, charges like Sections 64(1), 66, 69, 74, 75(2), 79, 115(2), 117(2), 124(1), 127(2), 109, 308(2), 351(2), 351(3), 316(2), 318(3), 61(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Sections 66E and 72 of the Information Technology Act are filed against the cricketer.
He applied for bail, but the court turned down the appeal straightaway and directed that the accused be kept in custody for 14 days. The final order is yet to be taken as the investigation is underway.
Police arrested Abishek Porel late Wednesday night
According to media reports on national media websites, Porel was taken into custody and subsequently arrested late Wednesday night. Before taking him to the Chinsurah court, a medical examination was also done.
"There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today," Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunar Bhushan Singh told the news agency PTI.
According to the complaint filed by the woman, Porel promised to marry her, but he did not keep his promise as their relationship gradually deteriorated. It was also claimed that families from both sides talked about their marriage, but the conversation proved unfruitful after the woman found Abishek Porel's involvement with other women.
Calcutta High Court directed the police to seize Abishek Porel's mobile and other electronic gadgets
Initially, when the case was under observation of the Calcutta High Court, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya asked the police to seize all of the electronic devices, including Porel's personal mobile phone, as these could help in the investigation.
"It is disclosed in the communication dated 6th July, 2026 that one pen drive/storage device is seized from the petitioner…and it is believed that certain materials are stored therein… It appears that accused persons…are required to be apprehended for seizure of electronic devices lying with them so that data stored therein cannot be shared with others," according to the court order.
