This summer, Jonny Bairstow has four hundred for England in Test cricket, and teammate Alex Lees is hopeful that he can keep up this performance “far into the rest of the year.” In England’s remarkable victories over New Zealand and India, Jonny Bairstow has had an outstanding summer thus far, scoring four outstanding Test match hundreds.
Following an IPL season with Punjab Kings, Bairstow transitioned right into Test cricket. After a few poor performances, he scored a match-winning 136 in the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
Bairstow was largely responsible for England’s seven-wicket victory over India.
On the last day, his undefeated 114 assisted the hosts in setting a new run-chase record (378). Along with Joe Root (142*), Bairstow also contributed to an unbroken 269-run stand.
The former has been in fantastic shape this year, much like Root. Most Test runs will now be scored in 2022 by Bairstow. He has scored 994 runs in eight games, a staggering average of 76.46.
Alex Lees has hailed Jonny Bairstow’s exploits:
Opening batsman for England Alex Lees praised Bairstow’s accomplishments as “absolutely unbelievable.”
As close friends who attended Yorkshire’s academy together, Bairstow gave a heartfelt speech in March when asked to award Lees with his England cap.
As he participated in a media net session with Durham Cricket partners, Vertu Motors, Lees remarked, “He is an experienced cricketer,” telling Mirror Sport.
“I think the apparent thing watching him this summer and knowing Jonny for quite a while now is that he is just been given the freedom to go out and express himself and just trust his instincts as a batter,” said the observer.
“Everyone will look at his strike rate throughout the summer and how he is been smashing it and putting bowling attacks on the ropes, but he is showing some really good tenacity and some wonderful batsmanship.”
“In the India Test, I believe he was 19 off 67 balls, but he can catch up very quickly because he is such a good player. He has been amazing this summer, and I hope that continues throughout the rest of the year. I have liked watching him bat.”
As stated by the ICC, Bairstow has joined Denis Compton (2002), Michael Vaughan (2002), and Joe Root (2021) as the only English batsmen to score six Test hundreds in a single calendar year (1947).
