Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi decided against shaking hands with the Afghanistan players after the second ODI on Thursday (August 24) in Hambantota. Tempers flared as the second ODI between Pakistan and Afghanistan ended in a thrilling and controversial manner.

The Babar Azam-led side registered a thrilling 1-wicket win over Afghanistan in Hambantota to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Afghanistan were once again on the verge of registering their first-ever ODI win over Pakistan and they were once again left heartbroken as the Men in Blue managed to cross the finishing line.

A stunning knock of 151 runs from opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz helped Afghanistan post a total of 300 for 5 in 50 overs. Gurbaz also shared a big stand of 227 runs with fellow opener Ibrahim Zadran who scored 80. In reply, Pakistan started well and were on 170 for 1 before a collapse saw them getting reduced to 211 for 6.

But Shadab Khan’s 48-run knock revived the chase before Naseem Shah hit two fours in the final over against Fazalhaq Farooqi to seal the game for his side. The game, however, turned a bit sour due to a controversial incident in the final over. Just before bowling the first ball of the over, Farooqi ran out Shadab Khan at the non-striker’s end. While the dismissal is well within the laws of the game, many consider it against the spirit of cricket.

Shaheen Afridi is angry with the Afghanistan team:

After the game ended, Shaheen Afridi made it clear that he was not happy with the Afghanistan team. The star bowler decided against shaking hands with the players of the opposition team after the match ended. Soon after Naseem Shah hit the winning runs, the Pakistan players including Naseem Shah ran on the field to celebrate the winning run.

Although all of his teammates stayed on the field to shake hands with the Afghan players, Shaheen Afridi decided to return to the dressing room after hugging Naseem. The left-arm pacer was also seen trying to stop his teammates from shaking hands with the opposition players before walking off the field.

Watch:

The third and final game of the series is scheduled to take place on Saturday (August 26). After the series, both Pakistan and Afghanistan will be participating in Asia Cup 2023, scheduled to begin on August 30.
