On Saturday, September 20, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming series against the Bangladesh National Cricket Team.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has taken some major calls while selecting the squads and has left out a few big names for the Bangladesh series

Fazalhaq Farooqi left out of the Afghanistan squads

Afghanistan will lock horns with Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series in October. The T20I matches will be played on October 2, 3, and 5 in Sharjah.

The ODI matches between the two teams will be hosted by Abu Dhabi on October 8, 11, and 14.

Meanwhile, the ACB selection committee has taken a major decision and dropped the star left-arm fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi from both T20I and ODI squads. Along with Farooqi, the selectors have snubbed all-rounders Gulbadin Naib and Karim Janat from both squads.

Batter Wafiullah Tarakhil and pacer Mohammad Saleem Safi made it to the T20I squad, while fast bowlers Bashir Ahmad and Abdullah Ahmadzai have been named in both squads.

Talking about spinners, AM Ghazanfar has been named in the main ODI squad but finds himself in the reserves in T20Is. His inclusion directly impacts Mujeeb Ur Rahman, as he has been snubbed from ODIs.

Also, Bilal Sami and Faridoon Dawoodzai have been kept as reserves in ODIs, while Rahmat Shah joins AM Ghazanfar in the T20I stand-bys list.

AfghanAtalan will bounce back strongly and make our nation proud - Naseeb Khan

In an official statement issued by the team, Afghanistan Cricket Board’s CEO, Mr. Naseeb Khan, said that they are looking at the series against Bangladesh as a perfect opportunity to prepare for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

He acknowledged the poor performance of the side in the Asia Cup 2025, where they faced a group stage exit, and was hopeful of the Afghans bouncing back.

“After a long six-month break from international cricket following the ICC Champions Trophy, we are now entering a packed season with many T20I games scheduled. This provides the team with an incredible opportunity to prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next year," he said.

“The performances in the Asia Cup 2025 were not as expected, but ups and downs are part of the game. As always, we remain hopeful that AfghanAtalan will bounce back strongly and make our nation proud in the upcoming events.”
