Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the Eden Gardens pitch in the ongoing IPL 2025.
According to reports, Kolkata Knight Riders asked pitch curator Sujan Mukherjee to prepare a spin-friendly track to ensure home advantage. However, the standoff between the franchise and the curator is showing few signs of coming to an end.
Ajinkya Rahane rattles Eden Gardens' curator
KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, on Tuesday (April 8), took a sly dig at the curator once again after his team lost a high-scoring game against Lucknow Super Giants at the Eden Gardens.
KKR's spinners got very little assistance from the surface as LSG posted a huge total of 238/3. In reply, KKR scored 234/7 and lost the game by just 4 runs.
Speaking at the end of the game, Ajinkya Rahane made it clear that he was not at all happy with the pitch while also taking a dig at Sujan Mukherjee.
"There have been enough talks over the wicket here. Main kuch bolunga to bawaal ho jayega (If I say anything, it'll lead to a big controversy).
"Let's just keep it that way. Our curator has got a lot of publicity. I think he's happy with that publicity. You can write whatever you want about the home advantage. If I feel something, I'll tell the IPL rather than talking here. I'll talk to the concerned authorities," said Rahane.
Snehasish Ganguly on Eden Gardens pitch:
With the Eden Gardens pitch hogging the limelight for all the wrong reasons, Snehasish Ganguly has leapt in its defence while also throwing his support behind the under-fire pitch curator. Speaking to RevSportz, the CAB boss made it clear that he sees no issues with the pitch favouring the batsmen over bowlers.
Ganguly stated that fans like to watch high-scoring games in the T20 format. He also pointed out that KKR won 5 of their 7 home games last season on a similar pitch.
"If you don't bring this game into discussion, if you talk about a normal T20, any game, be it IPL, be it an international match, even if it is a club match, in a T20 game, why do people come to see? Because they want some exciting batting, exciting shots, exciting pitches. That's why they come to enjoy T20 games," said Snehasish Ganguly.
"When they come to a T20 game, they come to a ground with a different mindset. Now, you have to understand, if you come back to KKR, KKR has been playing at the Eden Gardens for the last 15 years. Last year, they have won 5 matches out of 7 matches. Same condition of the pitch," Snehasish Ganguly added.
Ganguly denies CAB's involvement
Speaking further, Snehasish Ganguly defended the Eden Gardens pitch curator. He also insisted that the CAB does not intervene in the pitch preparation process.
"Our curator is so experienced, man. So now, I don't want to enter into this controversy because I am not very much aware of what comments somebody has made, what comments from the other side have come.
"I think Sujan da is so experienced. So, no intervention is required from the association. CAB does not interfere in any matter about our pitch," said the CAB president.
When asked about Rahane's recent comments about Sujan Mukherjee, Snehasish Ganguly declined to make any comments, saying that he was unaware of the remarks.
"Don’t know what Rahane has said, because the clipping is not with me. If the clipping is with the CAB, then we will decide whether we need to make any comment or not," said Ganguly.
