Ajit Agarkar is likely to remain at the helm of the panel of selectors at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as per recent claims. During a recent Sports Tak video, it was claimed that the board could consider Agarkar as the head of the selectors until the 2027 World Cup. In 2027, the ICC will host the next edition of the ODI World Cup.
During Agarkar's tenure as the chief selector, the India National Cricket Team claimed multiple ICC trophies, including two ICC T20I World Cups, the 2024 World Cup, and then the 2026 World Cup, and in the previous year, the Men in Blue claimed the Champions Trophy as well.
BCCI already extended Ajit Agarkar's contract once
Because of the white-ball formats, for the last couple of years and in the ongoing year, the Indian cricket team remains arguably the most powerful team in T20Is. Soon after the conclusion of the 2026 T20 World Cup, Ajit Agarkar's contract with the BCCI as the chief selector expired. Because of the team's success in the multi-team event, the board officials awarded him a contract extension.
Agarkar is now continuing his job for an extended period. This could be extended again in the future. If the claims made in the Sports Tak video are believed to be true, then it will not be a surprising move if the top officials of the board decide to keep Agarkar in the role for another stint.

BCCI officials were impressed with Ajit Agarkar's decision-making skills
The former Team India cricketer's contract expired in June 2026, and it was renewed by the board without making any delay. In an explanation, the BCCI source told India Today that the board officials were impressed by the bold decisions taken by Agarkar during his tenure, which, at the end of the day, benefited the team in the ICC tournaments.
"Under Agarkar's tenure, the team had a seamless transition and was fearless in taking bold decisions, and that's the reason the board felt he should continue. Agarkar’s contract will be renewed, which is expiring on June 26," the source told BCCI in mid-April.
Why should BCCI continue with Ajit Agarkar as the chief selector?
In the next year, eyes will be on the former cricketer as the Indian cricket team will be in South Africa for the ODI World Cup, which the team is yet to win, with Agarkar as the chief selector.
The 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup is scheduled to run from October 4 to November 21, 2027. Soon after the conclusion of the tournament, focus will be gradually shifted to the preparations for the T20 World Cup, where the Men in Blue will participate again as the defending champions.
As there will be a very limited time frame between the final of the 2026 ODI World Cup and the opener of the 2027 T20 World Cup, the BCCI could stay with Agarkar.
