Ajit Agarkar’s position as India’s chief selector is under the scanner as the BCCI is set to take the final call on the same at the Annual General Meeting on September 18. But before this AGM, fresh developments suggest that the BCCI could allow Agarkar to continue in his role.

BCCI impressed with the Gautam Gambhir-Ajit Agarkar coordination
As reported by a Jagran News journalist, Abhishek Tripathi, a section of the BCCI is reportedly satisfied with the way Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir are working together. Their understanding and coordination with the Indian team are seen as positive things.
Some board officials feel there is no need to disturb the setup before the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2027. So, Agarkar's position seems safe as of now. However, the BCCI is also considering another possible candidate for the chief selector position.
BCCI move hints at Ajit Agarkar extension
Some BCCI officials believe that VVS Laxman could be given the chief selector’s responsibility in the future. Laxman could also be asked to handle the Centre of Excellence (CoE) along with the chief selector's role.
The matter is expected to be discussed at the BCCI Annual General Meeting on September 18. So, the present situation suggests that Agarkar’s position as the chief selector is safe.
Actually, the BCCI has invited applications for the junior selection committee, but it has not opened applications for the senior selection committee. This could be a big hint that the board is currently not looking to replace Agarkar and may give him more time to continue as chief selector.

The Ajit Agarkar era brings major white-ball success
Meanwhile, Ajit Agarkar took charge as the chairman of India’s senior selection committee in July 2023, and his tenure has been especially successful in white-ball cricket. India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and then ended their long ICC trophy wait by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The success continued with the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. And then, India scripted history by winning the 2026 T20 World Cup, giving Agarkar a strong record in major tournaments.
During this period, India has also managed a smooth transition towards younger players, especially in T20Is. The selectors have taken some bold calls while building a strong team for the future.
Tests remain the main challenge
However, India’s result in Test cricket has not been that impressive, and the team is now in a tough situation to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Since Agarkar is now nearing three years in the job, his future has been under discussion.
Some reports suggest that the BCCI could give the chief selector a one-year extension that could take him through June 2027, allowing him to remain in charge during the 2027 ODI World Cup.
