Aman Gupta’s boAt has publicly joked about the infamous India National Cricket Team “jersey curse” as the BCCI is hunting for a new sponsor after ending the deal with Dream11 due to the latest law just before the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE.
The Indian audio giant poked fun at the fact that almost every previous sponsor faced major troubles after sponsoring the national cricket team’s jersey. boAt posted on its official X handle how a new intern suggested they sponsor the Indian cricket team’s jersey.

And they are playfully highlighting the long history of troubles faced by previous sponsors. The post quickly went viral, with fans recalling the so-called “jersey jinx” that has haunted big names like Sahara, Star India, Oppo, Byju’s, Paytm, Micromax, and, most recently, Dream11.

boAt had posted on X (formerly Twitter) on August 29: “This intern joined 3 days back and said, 'Why don't we sponsor Team India's cricket jersey?'" Who is going to tell her?” However, they later deleted the post from their X handle, but it had already gone viral for reminding people of the dramatic history.

Speaking about the curse, Sahara, the Indian team’s sponsor from 2001 to 2013, faced severe regulatory crackdowns, and its chairman, Subrata Roy, was even arrested in 2014. Disney-owned Star India, which replaced Sahara, struggled with antitrust investigations and losses through Hotstar.
Then, the Chinese smartphone giant Oppo signed a ₹1,079 crore deal with the BCCI but withdrew early after poor returns and patent lawsuits. Byju’s, once India’s biggest edtech unicorn, failed to pay ₹158 crore to the BCCI and faced insolvency petitions, regulatory scrutiny, and massive layoffs.

Not just them, Paytm also battled losses and regulatory issues, while Micromax collapsed under competition from Chinese brands. And now, Dream11, the primary jersey sponsor of the Indian cricket team, ended its ₹358-crore deal following the Online Gaming Bill, which banned real-money gaming ads in India.
This string of controversies, financial troubles, and legal hurdles has kept the “jersey jinx” narrative alive. Fans have been joking that sponsoring the Indian cricket jersey might bring bad luck to the sponsors. Boat’s playful dig reminded everyone that the jersey comes with a risky history.
BCCI hunts new jersey sponsor ahead of Asia Cup 2025
With the Asia Cup 2025 starting on September 9 in the UAE and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, the BCCI is now in search of a new long-term jersey sponsor. It is also being said that the Men in Blue will turn up with the sponsor in the upcoming tournament.
The Asia Cup 2025 will feature eight teams divided into two groups of four. Group A includes India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B has Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. The top two teams from each group will move to the Super Fours stage.
And the best two from there will compete in the final. This edition will see Oman making their debut in the Asia Cup. They have previously played in three T20 World Cups in 2016, 2021, and 2024. The tournament is set to take place in the UAE from September 9 to 28.
