Andrew McDonald Appointed Australia Head Coach For Four Years

Andrew McDonald has been appointed head coach of the Australia men’s national team on a four-year deal on Wednesday. The 40-year-old’s appointment comes after taking charge of the team as a caretaker for more than two months.

McDonald was named interim head coach of the Australian team after Justin Langer resigned from the post on February 5 as the latter wasn’t satisfied with the renewal contract of Cricket Australia. McDonald’s first assignment was the T20I series against Sri Lanka at home, which the Aussies dominated with a 4-1 victory.

McDonald’s main highlight came into the spotlight is Australia’s 1-0 Test series win in Pakistan last month followed by the one-off T20I match triumph. The success in the Pakistan tour paved the way for the Victorian to the top role in Australian cricket.

McDonald’s first assignment as a full-time coach will be the Sri Lanka tour in June. It should be noted that Australia will defend their T20 World Cup title on home soil in the October-November period later this year.

McDonald acknowledged the leadership role of his predecessor Justin Langer and both the Australian captains – Pat Cummins (red-ball) and Aaron Finch (white-ball).

“The journey so far has been particularly pleasing, and I am honored to be given this incredible opportunity for what is an exciting period ahead,” McDonald was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

“The success of the World Cup, the Ashes Series and now Pakistan has been a testament to the hard work and leadership of Justin, Pat and Aaron along with the players and the support staff,” he added. 

In October 2019, McDonald was appointed assistant coach to Justin Langer, he was interim head coach during the three-match ODI series in India in January 2020. Apart from his association with the Australian team, McDonald has coached Leicestershire County Cricket Club, Victoria, Melbourne Renegades (BBL) and Rajasthan Royals (IPL).
