The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the names of the cricketers who have won the ICC Player of the Month for May 2022 for men’s and women’s categories on June 13, 2022. Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka won in the men’s category, while Pakistan’s Tuba Hassan took the award in the women’s category.

Angelo Mathews beat off competition from fellow countryman Asitha Fernando and Bangladesh star Mushfiqur Rahim to win the award.

The former Sri Lanka captain was in astounding form with the bat against Bangladesh in the recent two-Test series away from home. he finished as the highest run-getter with 344 runs, which included two centuries. In the first Test in Chattogram, he narrowly missed out on a double ton at 199. In the second match in Mirpur, he scored a brilliant 145 in the first innings in Sri Lanka’s 10-wicket win over the hosts.

He now also holds the honour of becoming the first Sri Lanka player to win the POTM award since its inception in January 2021.

On being named the Player of the Month, Mathews said: “I am absolutely honoured and delighted to be the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. I would like to congratulate Asitha Fernando and Mushfiqur Rahim who were front runners for this award, on their spectacular performances. I am grateful for the opportunity and I wish to thank the almighty, my teammates, support staff, and fans for believing in me and supporting me as always. I would like to dedicate this to the people of Sri Lanka. Let’s never stop believing.”

Tuba Hassan Beats Competition From Bismah Maroof And Trinity Smith To Win Player Of The Month

On the other hand, Tuba Hassan of Pakistan, who made her international T20 debut against Sri Lanka in May, won the prestigious Player of the Month award in her first nomination. This also made her the first Pakistan player to win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award.

She beat competition from her captain Bismah Maroof and 17-year-old Trinity Smith from Jersey to win the POTM award.

On her debut, Hassan picked 3/8 which fetched her the Player of the Match award on debut. She struck with her second international ball to dismiss Anushka Sanjeewani. In the next two games, she picked up a wicket each but was miserly in her economy. She finished the series with five wickets at an average of 8.8 and an economy rate of just 3.66 and was named the Player of the Series in Pakistan’s 3-0 clean sweep.
