Sri Lanka's remarkable resurgence in international cricket has been nothing short of a fairy tale, with their recent triumphs over some of the biggest names in the game highlighting how they are once again finding their roots where they belong.
From a historic ODI series win over India after 27 long years to clinching a memorable Test victory in England after a decade, the Sri Lankan cricket team is now on the cusp of another monumental feat—a Test series win over New Zealand after 15 years.
The remarkable turnaround raised the question of what has sparked this new era of dominance for Sri Lanka, and Angelo Mathews has the perfect response. The answer lies not just in the performance on the field but in the refreshing atmosphere within the dressing room of the Islanders.
Angelo Mathews credits coach Sanath Jayasuriya for Sri Lanka's major turnaround
Mathews, Sri Lanka’s senior all-rounder and former captain, has pointed to one name that has been instrumental in this transformation: Sanath Jayasuriya, who is currently serving as the head coach. The iconic cricketer-turned-administrator has had a profound impact on the Sri Lankan setup.
Taking over as the director of cricket and now serving as the head coach, Jayasuriya has brought with him a wave of confidence and belief that the team had been sorely lacking. And Angelo Mathews said that the legendary cricketer’s calming presence, as well as his ability to communicate effectively with the players, has rejuvenated the entire Sri Lankan team.
The seasoned all-rounder claimed that Sri Lanka’s dressing room has transformed into a place of positivity and freedom under Jayasuriya’s leadership, saying players now feel empowered to express themselves without the constant fear of failure.
Sri Lanka has rediscovered the magic that once made them a dominant force in world cricket, and Mathews said that it’s all credit goes to their new coach Jayasuriya. He said that Jayasuriya’s approach has been pivotal in nurturing the young talent coming through the ranks while ensuring that the senior players have the support they need to perform at their best.
Sanath has done a wonderful job grooming young players: Mathews
More than just tactical brilliance, Jayasuriya focuses on keeping the national team focused on a singular goal and stresses on unity and cohesion, and it has created a harmonious environment where every player is aligned with the broader team vision, according to the former captain.
Angelo Mathews said at the press conference in Galle: “I think Sanath Jayasuriya is taking over. He's given confidence when he was the cricket director, and now he's become the coach. Even though he gets nervous, he gives confidence to all of us. That makes a massive difference. In a dressing room, you have to keep it calm.
You should be able to communicate with the players in a correct way. We've been given the freedom. We are all working towards one goal, and everyone's on the same page. Sanath has done a wonderful job grooming young players as well as looking after each and every one of us. I think he's done a tremendous job. I wish him all the very best in the future.”
