Former Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma revealed a big regret after his match-winning knock in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Friday, May 30, against the Gujarat Titans (GT).
Rohit Sharma, while expressing disappointment over his batting performances, said that he would have liked to have more half-centuries to his name in the Indian Premier League 2025.
MI seal Qualifier 2 spot with Eliminator win, thanks to Rohit Sharma
Rohit had a new opening partner in Jonny Bairstow for the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh.
It looked like the Rohit-Jonny pair was an upgrade from the Rohit-Ryan duo as both the Indian veteran and out-of-favor Englishman played an attacking brand of cricket in the powerplay.
Rohit and Bairstow stitched together 84 runs in 7.2 overs before the England National Cricket Team batter fell to Sai Kishore.
The former MI skipper spent more time in the middle than his partner and scored 81 runs off 50 balls, with 9 fours and 4 sixes before being dismissed by Prasidh Krishna. Notably, it was the fourth half-century for Rohit Sharma in the ongoing season, with all of them coming in the wins.
However, the modern-day great isn't satisfied with that and wants more 50-plus scores in his tally. Speaking after winning the Player of the Match award, Rohit Sharma expressed disappointment over having just four fifties and said:
"I have got only four fifties. Would have loved to score more fifties. Good day for us as a team. I do understand the importance of playing this Eliminator and going through this and taking the next step forward. Really proud of a complete team effort."
I got lucky as those catches were dropped - Rohit Sharma
Rohit had a lucky day on the field against the Gujarat Titans as he was dropped twice in the first three overs of the match. Talking about this, Rohit said that a batter needs to have the luck factor on his side in some games and make the most of it, as he did. He elaborated:
"When I play the game, I try to do my best keeping everything aside. Making sure how I can do the job for the team. I had to make the most of the luck. I am glad I could do that.
"Get the team into a good position. It was going to be challenging with the dew coming. The bowlers held their nerves really well. To be honest, I have played those shots before in the tournament and found fielders. Somewhere down the line you got to be lucky and today was that day for me. I got lucky as those catches were dropped."
Jonny I have watched him over the years from the other side - Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma signed off by praising the MI bowling unit and his opening partner, Jonny Bairstow. He said:
"But even after that you got to play. I was focussing on keeping the momentum and tempo going. Was a good bowling effort. Jonny I have watched him over the years from the other side.
"We know the quality he has. Lot of experience playing in this format. Never looked like he was playing the first game. We got the start and capitalized on it."
