The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 kicked off with a moment no one saw coming, as Arjun Tendulkar walked out to open the innings for Goa in their match against Uttar Pradesh at the Jadavpur University Campus ground in Kolkata on Wednesday (November 26).

Arjun Tendulkar, son of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, took on a new role in the opening match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 and stunned one and all. Even the left-arm fast bowler managed to impress everyone with his bold approach, clean hitting, and ability to adapt to a completely new role.

Playing as an opener for Goa, the left-handed batter played a quick knock of 28 runs off 22 balls. His innings was short but full of intent, featuring four boundaries that showed he wasn’t afraid to take charge at the top.

He opened the batting with Ishaan Gadekar, who also started brightly but fell early for 16 off 10 balls after being bowled by experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

With one wicket down, Arjun carried the momentum forward and found strong support in Abhinav Tejrana (72 runs off 35 balls). Together, they stitched a valuable 55-run partnership for the second wicket, giving Goa a solid base during the powerplay.

Goa post 172/9 after Arjun Tendulkar’s fiery start

Arjun mixed strong strokes with attacking shots, showing surprising ease in a position he rarely plays. His innings was ended by the Uttar Pradesh pacer Shivam Mavi in the 8th over, leaving Goa at 75 for 2 in 7.3 overs. He scored those runs at a strike rate of over 127.

Later, Vikash Kanwar Singh’s 21* and Rajashekhar Harikant’s valuable 12 runs took Goa to 172/9 in their 20 overs against Uttar Pradesh in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 match.

For Uttar Pradesh, Shivam Mavi scalped three wickets, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned with two wickets. On the other hand, Sunil Kumar, Vipraj Nigam, and Prashant Veer each scalped one wicket in the ongoing SAMT 2025 clash in Kolkata.

Arjun Tendulkar’s career stats; eyes a breakthrough season at LSG

Meanwhile, Arjun Tendulkar has so far played 24 T20s and taken 27 wickets at an average of 25.07 and an economy rate of 8.75, and scored 119 runs with the highest score of 47 runs. In 22 FC matches, Tendulkar took 48 wickets and scored 620 runs, including one century and two fifties.

The 26-year-old also played 18 List-A matches, taking 24 wickets and scoring over 100 runs so far. In the IPL, Arjun has batted just once and scored 13 runs from nine balls faced.

Earlier this month, Tendulkar’s IPL journey took a new turn. After spending a few seasons with the Mumbai Indians, the young all-rounder was traded to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for Rs 30 lakh before the IPL 2026 mini-auction in December.

It will be a fresh start for the legendary cricketer’s son, and he is expected to get more opportunities to grow and prove himself in a different environment. He will now play under the captaincy of Rishabh Pant for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL 2026.
