As India gears up to face South Africa in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at Barbados' Kensington Oval on Saturday, June 29, the left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is all set to etch his name into the record books by creating history in the tournament.

The 24-year-old speedster is just three wickets away from surpassing the record for the most dismissals in a single edition of the T20 World Cup set by Afghanistan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi earlier this week during their semifinal clash with England in Trinidad and Tobago.

Arshdeep Singh eyes T20 World Cup record as India set to face South Africa in Final showdown

Arshdeep has already scalped 15 wickets in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 at an economy rate of 7.50. With this number, the Indian pacer has found himself in the fourth spot on the list of top wicket-takers in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.

Currently, Afghanistan's Farooqi leads the pack with 17 wickets in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, breaking the previous record held by Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.

Farooqi's stellar performance in the tournament surpassed Hasaranga's record of 16 wickets achieved in the last T20 World Cup. Now, Hasaranga is sitting in the second spot on the list, followed by another Sri Lankan, Ajantha Mendis (15 wickets).

Arshdeep is in the fourth spot with 15 wickets to his name, and he will have a great opportunity to create history when India faces South Africa in the finals. If he manages to get three wickets in the final against South Africa, the Punjabi lad will become the bowler with the most number of wickets in a single edition of the T20 World Cup 2024.

However, it remains to be seen whether Arshdeep will make history, but it is very important for him to continue his red-hot form with the ball to help India beat South Africa in the summit clash in Barbados. Notably, India and South Africa are the only teams that are unbeaten in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Inzamam-ul-Haq and Saleem Malik question Arshdeep Singh's reverse swing

Well, the Men in Blue are not only aiming to end their ICC trophy drought by winning the title, having last won their Champions Trophy in 2013, but they are also eyeing their first T20 World Cup title since the triumph in the inaugural edition of the tournament in South Africa.

Earlier, former Pakistan captains Inzamam-ul-Haq and Saleem Malik accused Arshdeep Singh of ball-tampering after his impressive performance against Australia in the Super-8 match. He recorded stunning figures of 3/37 to help India crush Australia by 24 runs in the Cup Super-8 match.

Inzamam said on a Pakistani TV show: “Arshdeep Singh was reverse-swinging the ball in the 15th over. Isn’t that too early for a new ball?” While Malik claimed: “Inzy [Inzamam], I always say this, eyes are kept shut when it comes to some teams, and India is one of those teams.”
